Ouch.
I got upto $37.9K, but was just picking the bare performance and creature comfort essentials. If I throw in leather and 18" wheels, I will be in the 40s.
Either way, that's more expensive than 328i, which is a faster (5.5 0-60 for 328i vs. 5.9 sec for JCW), higher quality sister vehicle throughout. Add a few more frivolous features, and you are in 335i territory, which is another performance level altogether.
MINI, what the @#$% are you thinking ?!??

2-series has plenty of flaws (mostly being way too heavy), but it's still sad that the top of the line JCW is slower and more expensive than bottom of the line BMW.
That's just wrong on so many levels !

There are actually a ton of quality options in $40K price bracket. I only referenced 328i because of the commonality of corporate ownership, engine size and architecture (BMW 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo), and overall shape and value proposition (2-door coupe).

This always brings to mind what you want in a $40k car. There are so many good used cars for well under 40 that have tons of soul. Heck, I'd buy 2 cars: a '06 MCS with mods, a 2004 Laguna Seca Blue M3, and have nearly 10k left over to repair and insure them.

At the top end there is the Audi S3. Then Golf - R. I am seriously looking because I have not had a good run with my MCS. If Mini Canada don't come to the table with the purchase of the JCW I'm dropping the brand and gong somewhere else. I know that there is nothing exactly comparable to a JCW but there are options that you could probably fall in love with over time.

Dude on JCW forum installed a thing in his stock fJCW to measure times, he go 5.6 sec 0-60, 13.1 second quarter at about 103 MPH. They say it's 208 HP but it's more like 230 on dyno. And the F56 car will be even more. 2600 pounds too. Nothing wrong with 328i but it's more of a cushy chumpmobile let's face it.

I autocross as well.
With a FWD platform, there's only so much power that can be put through the front wheels before it just becomes a waste. The additional power also unbalances the car - it's no longer a machine of harmony, but one of brute force. Teaching FWD brutes to dance is a challenge.
I had a GTI prior to my GP - had it tuned, ton of suspension mods... and I ended up putting it back in stock mode every time I autocrossed it because the tune was just far too much power for a FWD vehicle on an autocross course.

I haven't driven a 228i, so can't comment, but these guys took one to track (with M package) and seamed to have had fun:

True, but that's just about the only commonly measured and reported stat that we can use to compare vehicle performance.

That's why you have a right foot that can modulate throttle impact, not just go WOT every time!

Everything is boring compared to a go-kart on track.

Sorry, I had never met a motorsports gearhead who had ever complained of having too much power. For FWD or RWD or AWD car.

Also, the housing inside the headlights is black on the cornering lights instead of grey as the are with the standard LEDs.
