JCW Intake question

Question...

'02 JCW intake currently installed with JCW filter. Debating the options of replacing the filter or the entire intake for an open type model...

Replace filter with a foam filter using existing intake? Remove JCW flap on intake?

Replace intake with an open intake setup from Alta, etc?

Any gains to be made by switching to open intake over the JCW with foam filter and flap removal?

Thanks all!

I was just about to ask the same question. I've read virtually every thread relating to cold air intakes and claims by different manufacturers. But everyone talks about what they have, how loud or quiet it is, how good it looks, wet filters, dry filters, paper, cotton, foam, etc., etc. But I've read nothing on actual comparisons between units.
I have an '06 JCW. I read where people use different filters to improve air flow and prop open or remove the flap in the JCW CAI box. But is this better, worse, or the same as after market units? Has anyone actually run a test? I'm interested in better performance. Don't want just anecdotal stories.

I should mention that Alta did some comparisons with their products vs JCW graphed out back in 2007 which was helpful. But then, is it advertising? No other products were compared. It'd be nice if there was an independent lab like Consumer Reports that would test some of these things. On the other hand maybe there is not enough of a difference between them for one to say "..we're better than they are and here's the proof...". I guess that's why we're here asking the question- to find out. Anybody out there? Here's that thread. It's a start: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...old+air+intake

You may notice more sound with a different filter, but HP?? Maybe 1-2hp, same as changing to a different airbox you may see 5HP. But is it worth it? That's up to you to decide. If you do change the filter I suggest the K&N, and if change the airbox I suggest the DDMworks.
