All of the OEM MINI 17 x 7 wheels have a 48 mm offset, so that would be a safe place to start.

somebody has this for sale on a local craigs list. he doesnt know what year its from but we know it is 17" for sure. so if all 17" OEM are the same it should fit my 2004 S

FWIW, I have a set of ENKEI 17x7 with 42mm offset and they work fine. Go to www.tirerack.com, do a search for wheels on your car and you'll find a range of offsets that will work.

Yes, if it's a 17" OEM MINI wheel, it will fit your 2004 'S' with no problems. Since the tire pressure monitoring system in 2004 still used the "indirect" method (no sensors in the wheels), that's one less thing to worry about. I think there are early OEM wheels that will physically fit the later cars but won't accept the TPMS sensors needed in the later MINIs.

Is the wheel in the photo an OE MINI wheel? If it is, it looks like the 16" R83 5-star wheel (aka Daytona). There are no OE 17" MINI wheels that look like that. If there's an aftermarket replica of the Daytonas in 17" I didn't know about it. If they are 16X6.5" Daytona wheels, they have an offset of 48 mm and weigh 20.1#.

I agree about the tire rack. I am running a 40mm offset, and I like the look quite a bit.
