I got the engine block and head back a couple weeks ago. I'm waiting on the Cam tools and clutch. Then we will start building the engine. I'll keep you updated. This has been a long slow process. Knowing what I know now I would have rather built an engine first.

Ray, I seldom read the JCW portion of NAM, so I just now found this thread.

I've recently had the Giken clutch, light flywheel, and LSD installed. The flywheel is great at high rpm's, but combined with the GT28RS and its slow spooling, my low rpm performance is in the toilet. I'm learning how to slip their single disk clutch to compensate, but I can't imagine how you're going to slip their two disk clutch. I'm working with Jeff (Alta) to get a higher launch rpm, which seems to help, but it's still a work in progress. Hopefully, you plan to use this setup exclusively for the oval/track, not the 1/4 mile drags, so the low rpm performance shouldn't be an issue.

As for the Garrett, I hope you're prepared for some extra dyno work. Jeff and Tim (Cobb) working together spent over 3 hours tuning my setup. Well worth the all-day trip to Portland, OR, 'cause there's no local talent in Northern NV.

I'm gonna subscribe to this thread and wish you the best.

Thanks for the info. At this point I'm not even sure the GT28 project is still on the table. The reason is due to the EXTREME lack of communication and follow through of some people involved with the rebuild. With winter coming up I'm putting the engine back together with the Alta turbo and if time I'll install the Meth injection kit. The single disc OS Giken clutch I paid for at the beginning for Sept still hasn't arrived. The OS locking diff we installed last week end. And the Cam locking tool arrived yesterday. So next week the engine will get built.

I'm in the business and this rebuild is a walk in the park. Anyone planning on rebuilding the R56 engine I suggest rebuilding a core before you blow it up. The delays are not with the car or parts. It's with the people involved.

Me too. But the problems aren't with the machine shop.

It's not dead. Just got the OS clutch today. See the attached pictures of the throw-out bearing. This OS clutch makes the stock clutch look like a tin can.

So today I bolted the clutch on. Trans is bolted to the engine. Installed the turbo and oil lines. Attached the starter and verified we have oil pressure. Wife bought the Methanol and distilled water. Friday we will do the install. And hopefully have it running.

I'm told they are 10.1:1, Also we took .003" off the head. JCW stock is 10:1. So we have a slight bump in compression.

Yeah they are 10:1

Ray I'm glad to see you've made progress since we last talked. I rarely poke into this section of the forum so I was kinda in the dark on where your build was at.

After 12 hours yesterday we got it running and the Auqamist installed!! It not drivable yet. Still have things to finish up. The eng sounds really good. No noise at all from the forged pistons. The OS clutch doesn't feel heavy at all. We also installed the water/meth injector at the outlet of the intercooler.

Yes it is. Put about 100 miles on it so far. Been trying to keep it under 10 psi. Though I've hit 15 twice. Runs great except for some cold driveability issues. I think because of 6 month old summer gas. I should have the tank empty in the next 2 days. I the Aquamist is in and set to kick in around 15 psi or so. It only activated a couple times briefly. I don't want to get on the throttle too hard until the engine is broken in a bit.

As this thread started my goal was "9000 rpm" That ain't happening right now due to valvetrain limitations. Supertech is working on springs and retainers. Also I'm using my Alta turbo not the GT28. I'm not going to do anything with the GT28 until at least Spring 2012.

I learned a lot about the car and engine during this rebuild. If anyone needs help or has questions ask away. I'll help however I can.

Ray
Talk to Jeff at Alta BEFORE you get too involved with the Garrett. Mine was about the 5th one he worked with, and he has a variety of war stories on the subject.
Again, best of luck with your project.
