Filter Upgrade for JCW Tuning Kit Airbox (Stage 1)
I got a 2009 R56 Cooper S and I am looking to upgrade the Air Filter for my JCW Tuning Kit Airbox (Stage 1). I am currently looking to decide one from MINI Madness and MINI Mania. Which one is better one in terms of results and fitment? Or is there one that's better than both of these in terms of results and fitment? Please advise! Thanks!

I am running the Mini Madness one and I love it. Fitment is great and much better driveability.

No cutting required on the Mini Madness JCW stage one replacement cone filter. Drops right in; takes about 5 minutes!
|
i use the maddness filter and it works good. i did have to make a small cut to get the filter to fit tight on the inside of the airbox. it kept coming loose. its really not a big deal though. you just trim the corner of the inside, side piece so the filter wont slip off.. now its on tighter then before and provides me with good piece of mind.

Thanks guys for the comments so far!
Does anyone have experience with the MINI Mania filter? Their filter comes with some metal plate to keep the filter in place. So perhaps this is one advantage over the MINI Madness filter in terms of fitment? Any advices? |
looks like the same thing to me.. why do you think it comes with a metal plate to keep the filter in place? probably does the same thing as cutting it IMO... the overall look is the same.

http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/G2.../InvDetail.cfm The MINI Mania filter comes with a metal plate to keep the filter in place. Is the metal plate's location the same place that you had to cut into the airbox then? |
looks like they figured that one out!
|
I guess that justifies why the MINI Mania filter is $10 more than the MINI Madness filter then!
|
I have Mini Madness as well. I just put a velcro (hook) on the filter housing and the loop side on the filter to hold it in place. Works fine w/o cutting or drilling etc.
I think this is much better than the foam ones. |
So seems like most people has the MINI Madness filter!
But does anyone else have the MINI Mania filter? If so, it would be much appreciated that they could share their experience! Thanks! :) |
3 Attachment(s)
Here is the MINI Madness replacement filter installed in the R56 JCW airbox:
Attachment 174145 Not sure what some folks needed to cut. As you can see it fits great. Attachment 174146 Factory R56 airbox bottom piece remains: Attachment 174147 |
the filter slides or vibrates off... at least mine did... check it in about a month or less just to be sure... i made a small cut to where the base of the filter sits and it slids down more & holds on much better... corner cut, about the size of a finger nail was all it needed for me for that little more grip...
|
I will keep and eye on it. Mine seats all the way down and I set the clamp screw, after tightening it, with locktite.

I used velcro to faster it so it seems fine as well. Even after 22 track days.

Aside from the fitment for now, does the filter alone actually give noticeably better throttle respone and power?
|
Can be kind of subjective without 0-60 times.
|
But when you do heel toe or double clutch, does it rev up quicker? If so, then the throttle response is considered better!
|
I don't do double clutch on the Mini. You don't need to on the Mini with Synchromesh. I double clutch when I run open wheels with straight cut gears.
I cannot feel any difference with h-t. Not sure you would because there is plenty of time to shift because of the dual mass flywheel. |
Okay, maybe not double cluching then! What I meant is rev matching when you downshift! The throttle response isn't too bad right now! But if it's a bit more responsive like NA cars, I would much prefer that instead! :)

I ordered a mini madness filter last week when I took my DDM intake off and installed a JCW intake.
I got 10 bucks that says the throttle response is better. The reason I say that? With my RMW tune, I was using the DDM street intake. Now that I've installed the JCW intake, my car idles rough and sputters for the first few minutes when it's warming up. Personally, I think the air flow is restricted and that's why the car doesn't like to idle cold. I'll bet when I put the new filter in, it'll idle normally. We'll see. Mark |

Mark I went from a JCW paper to Mini Madness in the JCW intake and did have have any difference in the idle. I had always thought that the filters only made a "slight" difference, perhaps, at high rpms. Maybe it matters more with the tune... Also, with H-T, it would make very little difference how fast/instant the revs are since it takes time (at least 0.5 secs) to shift gears. Getting up the revs faster is not going to matter especially since we made a slow reacting and heavy dual mass clutch. Are you going to VIR in June? Would like to take a look at what you have on the track... S-driver and I will be there with our Minis. |
Just Ordered a filter for my stage 1 from Mini Mania... will come back with fitting results, photos and maybe a before an after sound video for all who are interested.
|
ive had the mini mania one in for over a year and no probs at all. also no probs with the rmw tune either.
