Someone test drove a JCW R56

not much info but this guy got a chance to test drive a JCW R56 in England..

from mini2.com

Had a drive of my dealers Works this afternoon and all in all was very impressed, it makes a lovely deep boom from the exhaust and it did feel faster than my standard S and would pull hard right up to the rev limiter.

Hopefully we will be hearing more commentary soon. Looks like the kits are getting fitted in England this week.

euro specs

The new JCW tuning kit drives the MINI Cooper S to completely new heights of performance: The kit boosts the output of the Twin Scroll turbocharged engine from 175 h.p to 192 h.p (141 kW). And the maximum torque is 250 Nm between 1750 and 5000 rpm. In fact with the overboost function, temporary peak values as high as 270 Nm are possible in the range from 1750 to 4500 rpm. This means the MINI Cooper S accelerates from 0 - 62 mph in only 6.8 seconds and onto a maximum speed of 145 mph (where permissible). Yup, the claim is for 13 kW.

The John Cooper Works site has a chart with the performance curves. You have to select "Tuning Kit", "MINI", and "After 11/06" in the three popups on the left, click "GO" then click "PERFORMANCE CURVE" on the right.

"192 bhp (141 kW) at 6000 rpm" vs. "175 bhp (128 kW) at 5500 rpm" for stock. Note that below about 4500 rpm the JCW Kit shows lower bhp numbers than stock.

Torque is "270 Nm at 1750-4500 rpm" vs. 260 Nm at 1700-4500 rpm. So, an increase of 10 Nm or 103.8%

The JCW site bhp figures are "slightly" overstated as they are metric horsepower

128 kW = 171.65 hp
141 kW = 189.08 hp

If that chart is right, it could prove to be a real dissapointment, and rather than actual performance, it will give you more of a perceived increase. I may have to take one for a serious test drive before plunking down $2400+.

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with that chart? The torque is equal or higher than stock across the range. How can horsepower be lower than stock at any point? [horsepower = torque x rpm]

Seems you could do that much power with simply a software change and/or a change in the wastegate to add a couple of pounds of boost. And note that the hp increase is 500 rpm higher too. Higher rpm usually equates to more hp.

Jerry

Why do they keep posting this 0-60 speed when eveymagazine test shows 6s range for the stock MCS, Grassroots Motorsports got 5.8.

Even at 5.8 seconds it is disappointing as it is still a bit shy of the 1st gen JCW performance. I would have thought that a JCW tune of the torquey turbo engine would have made for a real screamer (at least under 5.5 sec)

Something is wrong with that chart. The torque curve for the JCW kit start out and stays higher than the stock one, but the HP figure is below the factory one. That makes no sense whatsoever.

One reason that a 6-speed R56 might be slower in times, to 60 mph is another shift. The earlier Mini S had a 5-speed, I believe, and the R56 has a 6-speed. One more shift can make a big difference in 0-60 times. But, the actual 0-100 would be much improved. I, too am disappointed in 0-60 times being in the 6's, but it is still seat of the pants performance that interests me.

All S model Coopers have always had six speed manuals. The non-S had a five speed in the R53 cars, but now has a six speed also. What you say about shifting is entirely correct though, cars that cater to the 0-60 crowd are often geared so that they get through that speed in 2nd gear.
