Bird's Eye Mirrors
 

I saw a vendor is selling birds eye sideview mirrors that stick onto the existing mirrors. Does anyone have any experience with them? Do they stick well? How is the view? Do they adversely affect the mirror heating?

I have multivex mirrors and love them. Clean OEM mirror with alcohol, let dry, then the multivexes stick forever unless you want to remove them. You seal around the upper 3/4 of the mirror with black silicone to keep the heat in, then the mirror heaters continue to function.

Wouldn't that prevent them from moving, then?

No - you're sealing to the edge of the OEM mirror surface - so they move with the OEM mirror. - you're not sealing to the mirror housing.

Note that mine is a 2006 - and the last time I checked multivex didn't have 2007 mirrors on their website (I assume their a different shape/size). But I hear they will make any size you want if you send them a template (tracing of your OEM mirror). You can contact them to find out.

I've used blind-spot mirrors (which is what I assume you're talking about) on both of my MINIs. I just get 'em from one of the local auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Autozone, whatever); they're about two bucks each. The last ones I got are super cheap and rattle. I'll be replacing them soon. My current car has the cold weather package, but I haven't driven in enough ice to see them working at all.

Oh, and I love 'em. I won't change lanes without them! :)

No. I am not talking about the small add-on buttons or clip-on additions. These are full mirrors that entirely cover the existing mirror glass.

+1 endorsement of Multivex. I got passenger side only, really helps.

I received a MultiVex mirror (passenger only) from a generous NAM member :thumbsup:. Huge difference (I have the cabrio also).

Highly recommend it.

Another endorsement for MultiVex. Truly indispensible for the cabrio but would make a nice enhancement for the hardtop as well. Do a forum search on multivex for more comments, including some photos.

I have Multivex on both sides and love them. There's much heated debate by NAMer on whether or not you need them. Well, I do and I love them.

Ask them for instructions about sending them a template. It shouldn't cost extra because they will use it for future orders. That's how it all began a couple of years ago with the 1st gen MINI, when somebody on the MINI2 forum sent in a template. It's even possible that they just haven't updated the website. When I bought mine in 2005, it was available for MINI but they hadn't added it to the list.

I prefer to think of it as an upgrade or enhancement. It is a stretch to say that you "need" them. However, for the cabrio I would say that it makes such a big difference at a low cost that it is a real no brainer.

I just installed mine this last weekend. The jury is still out. I was slightly off with my install, so it fix it I'll have to pull em and get new double side tape to try again. So far... on the drivers side...it's a little wierd. Yeah I see cars in the blind spot, but it's MUCH more difficult to tell how far they are, resulting in a glance over the shoulder anyways. On the passenger side, it's not as noticeable of a difference. (only 50% more viewable area, as opposed to 200% more on the drivers side.)

I had the same problem with judging distance on the drivers side. As the daily driver I'm sure I would have adjusted to it, but my wife is also an infrequent driver of the car and I thought it would be better for her if she didn't have to readjust to it every time she started driving our MINI. We now have the OEM Euro mirror on the drivers side which gives a wider view but is easy to adjust to.

On the passenger side, the Multivex makes a huge difference for the blind spot of the cabrio. When the top is up, the large expanse of roof fabric blocks out a lot of the side view, and the Multivex lets me see exactly where I need to.

What about the multi view interior wide, racing type mirrors setup?

I started with just the passenger side because some folks had tried the driver's side and didn't like it. But I soon added the driver's side and LOVE it. Absolultely takes some getting used to. Eventually you figure out where cars appear left-to-right in the mirror depending on their location - so you know when they're beside you vs. behind you. You just have to re-program your depth perception firmware a bit... :wink:

I've got them on both sides. It did take some getting use to on the driver's side, but they are great now that I've adjusted. One trick is to only glance at the driver's side mirror. Seems if you try to focus both eyes on them you have a hard time with depth perception.
The best thing to do is pop out your OEM mirror and then clean and install the MultiVex and seal the gap between OEM and MultiVex with silicone caulking. The last step is to seal in the heat from your heated mirrors so they will still defrost/deice your MultiVex. My heated mirrors still work well.

At first, I had some trouble adjusting at night. I was able to adjust easily during the daylight. As long as you glance at the first 1/3 of the Multivex, it's easy to adjust.. just don't stare into it. The peripheral vision is greatly increased, especially on the Cabrio :thumbsup:
