Help! Bonnet stripes removed, sticky residue left behind...

So... I decided to pull off my racing stripes (I hated the look of the white stripes with the black pinstripes since I got it, and wanted to see what it looked like with no stripes before I got plain white ones put on). There's some type of sticky residue (Glue I assume) that's stayed adhered to one side of the car. I had no problem with the right side, it came right off with no residue. My question is this, how do I remove this residue without damaging the paint on the car? I don't want to use something like goo gone, and soap isn't likely to remove it. I haven't tried a clay bar, but i'm not sure it would do anything. I'm NOT going to take a razor blade to my paint, so don't suggest that! .

In short, HELP!

Sunday's are usually slow on site and the last day of AMVIV is gonna be even slower

My first thought would be the Goo-Gone but you might also try using a hair dryer or heat gun to warm the glue up. That should soften it up enough to come off. But if you use a heat gun, be careful not to heat it up too much

I have personally used Goo Gone on Blimey's paint with no ill effects... obviously you want to do a very good wash and wax afterward... though I haven't done it on LARGE areas... and certainly not in a big stripe up the bonnet...

May want to try some of the commercial tar/bug removers... I'm sure both OctaneGuy and dragonflyer have personal experience on bonnet stripe adhesive that they could share. I suspect both are in transit this evening back from AMVIV... but you may want to PM them.

Isopropyl alcohol also works great and is a little bit milder than goo-gone.

But like blimey said, I have used both on my paint with no ill effects.

You could also use a degreaser type detergent like Simple Green.

Laquer thinner, but be careful not to rub too hard!

Guy who did my stripes suggested mineral spirits. I've only used it to get the "sticky" from old decals off though.

Goo Gone works great, wd-40 also works good with little to no adverse impact to the paint.
No matter what you use, be ready to wash and rewax.

Not sure, but OctaneGuy is probably on his way back from AMVIV. I'm sure he'd have advice for you in the Detailing 101 forum, once he gets home.

Let me know if you want me to move this thread over to that forum for you.

I had the same problem when i removed my stripes, dont freak out it"s as simple as using goo gone then a good coat wax and wallah it"s all gone.. how ever when its time to apply new stripes you hafta ramove the coat of wax by using alcohol, if you dont the new stripes will not adhere good.. good luck and happy motoring.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I actually tried goo gone on a small area but decided it'd be best to check first, as I don't really want a giant rub spot in my paint! I guess I just need to scrub it good, and yea I'll definatly be reapplying wax afterwards . Thanks MiniClo but I think i'll just PM him later and check with him :-).

GooGone and WD40 are solid and will NOT hurt the paint at all. Make sure you give the car a good washing afterwards, followed by some paint cleaner and wax, it deserves it after what its been through

45 minutes of scrubbing later with bloody fingers, half a bottle of goo gone, and about 5 different towels and i've gotten it all off. I didn't have time to wash it last night but I quick detailed the entire hood and then waxed it with some wax I had sitting around. I'll give the whole car a nice bath and maybe just rewax it all once the weather calms down out here. Doesn't know whether it wants to rain or bake everyone alive. Yesterday it was clear skies and 80 degrees, today it's in the 60's and overcast... ugh.

Didn't see this thread before, so I'll apologize for not posting before your fingers were bleeding. I had the same problem and used GooGone on a paper towel and just let it sit on the adhesive for a while to soften the glue then used a towel to wipe the softened glue off the bonnet. It still took a while and still took quite a bit of elbow grease, but not as much as it could have.

Sounds like someone is spoiled by the southern cal weather.

60's and overcast ? Sounds like great detailing weather, especially in March.

Hehe, I was pretty busy today or I would have thought more seriously about it. With the detailing of course comes the washing, and the weather is sometimes so random out here it's hard to even think about washing your car just to have it rain a few hours later .
