Uh, what's a parcel shelf? I've read mentions of it on this site. Any pictures?
|
It's a small shelf that fits under the steering wheel taking the place of the flat panel there. It's a pretty neat little addition for some extra small item storage Here's a link for a picture:

Oh. Thanks. I feel much better now. It is cool. And where can this thing be ordered?

Check out Classic MINI in the Sponsor Directory. That's where I got mine. There's also a link on MCO's front page about new pricing. Cheers, Bill |
Agreed....go to Classic! Great people to deal with!

I ordered the parcel shelf from Classic MINI and it was shipped on Wednesday. In the mean time I have looked at the panel that must be removed on my MCS and I can’t figure out how it is attached. The best I can figure is it is a snap fit as I can see no screws or other fasteners but I am afraid of breaking something by yanking on the panel. Any advice on how it removes?
|
That's right, just give it a good firm pull, and the existing piece will pop loose from the top. You won't break it.
Here is a step by step: http://www.zangerlivingood.com/mini/ParcelShelf/ See ya, JS |
Thank you for the advice and the link. A picture is worth a 1,000 words. With your help I will have no trouble with installation. Thanks again.

You just received yours from Classic Mini? Wonder if mine is coming soon then since I have been on the back order list for probably 2 or 3 weeks now. Man, I hope it's on it's way!

LaBoy,
Actually installing this shelf gives your more storage AND more leg room. That knee bolster covers a large/deep area. The knee bolster was designed to allow USA bound MINI's to have a symertical look with the glove box. Poppy **** I say. Screw symetry (they don't have it in Europe) and give me the storage it was intended to have! |

I would guess that the reason for the knee bolster is get by US Federal Safety Standards and their crash testing. |
I installed this over the weekend. About 15 minutes and I really like it.
The 1st step is to pull down hard on the top of the bolster. The original part has hinges on the bottom and "pop-in" posts at the top. When you pull the top, the posts just pop out. When you pull the bottom out for the final removal, angle it so that the hinges are horizontal, then pull straight out on the horizontal plane. There are 2 hinges that hook downwards and one that hooks upwards, so it works best if they all have an equal amount of travel needed. |
i cant get it in.....

It is kind of funny how Mini (or Mini USA) probably spent time and money designing an American spec Mini, and what most American Mini owners want are euro spec Minis.
The rear fog lamps for example, and the parcel shelf. Mini could have saved money by just making one Mini for everybody... The parcel shelf is VERY useful. I put there my palm, CD case, book, etc and it really solves the Mini´s lack of true center console. Amazingly nothing ever falls from the parcel shelf. |
wow that is pretty cool, I'm going to have to order one once my mini comes in

I want one, too. By "Classic MINI", do you guys mean Classic Auto Campus in the sponsor directory? They don't mention the parcel shelf, so do I just e-mail them? How much with shipping?
I didn't realize that this could go on the driver's side - I thought it somehow replaced the glovebox on Euro/Mex MINIs. |
Yes it is Classic Auto Campus that most are buying their parcel shelves from. Thay have the part #'s for all parts needed for the set-up so you can get it just by calling or emailing them and tell them you want the parcel shelf. Here is their latest MCO announcement on their special offer with pricing. I put mine in a week ago and have LOVED it!
|
I ordered my parcel shelf from Classic MINI about 3 weeks before I got the car. I installed it earlier this week. Kind of scary pulling at the bottom hinges, but the bolster came off fine. Works and looks great.
|
I ordered from Classic, very pleased, and I installed mine last night. I also installed the full toggle rack (I ordered it long before the announcement of the rear fogs being a possibility here). While I was at it, I pulled the glovebox and and felt-taped a squeaky joint that was driving me nuts.
If you're going to do both the toggles and the shelf, do them at the same time, since they share some of the same disassembly needed for both projects. It's a little weird ripping apart a car that is less than a week old. See ya, JS |
Installed my Euro Shelf today (also ordered from Classic Mini). It really looks more "natural" with this in place. Plus it's nice to have more storage. Had a little trouble at first getting the right sided bolt to line up. Good to go now though!
Knee bolster, now another piece in the "Box O' Spare Parts" for my MINI. |
I can't figure out how to install this thing. No directions whatsoever from Classic MINI! I didn't receive any blue plastic nuts like the pictures above show. And I can't for the life of me figure out how the bottom edge can manage to clip into anything.
Help! |
If you didn't receive the blue plastic nuts, you ought to call Classic MINI and tell them; those are definitely necessary for attaching the parcel shelf, and were included in my kit from them. It may have just been an oversight that they weren't included.
As far as how the bottom edge fits in, it really just slides into place and then clips in. The most difficult part for me was just getting the bolts to line up with the nuts for attachement. _________________ <IMG SRC=http://images.snapfish.com/336%3A%3A8%3B523232%7Ffp66%3Dot%3E2327%3D%3C8%3B%3 D829%3Dxroqdf%3E232337%3B9%3B9254ot1lsi> '03 MC: PS/B with red interior, premium and sport packages, chrome, xenons, CVT |
If you bought your set up from Classic Mini the blue clips are actually black. You pull down the knee bolster and you will see a small flat area about 3 inches to either side of the steering column. You slid these clips onto this area with the flat side pointing towards you (and the side with the curve towards the engine). Then take your Euro shelf and insert it bottom first then rotate the top into place. The top piece will kind of come over two lips (one on either side of the steering column). These lips will support the part of the shelf that sticks out. You will know what I mean when you see it.
I did have some trouble getting the right side bolt to line up at first. Took some wiggeling but I finally got it to catch the clip that I put in earlier. Hope this helps. If not let us know. - Driving Hamster |
