Doug Whalen's Latest...

I had been struggling for quite some time to come up with a design for a custom-engraved Whalen Shift Machine and had several email exchanges and phone calls with Doug. A few weeks ago, I provided Doug with a jpg and his graphics guy edited and tweaked it for me.

Well, for those of you that remember the 60's cartoon character Super Chicken, you'll appreciate this masterpiece! Super Chicken, along with the other Jay Ward cartoon characters like Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle, Fractured Fairy Tales and Rocky and Bullwinkle were pretty sophisticated and probably more suited to adults - there was a lot of subtle humor embedded in those cartoons that a kid would never 'get'. But of all those, Super Chicken was my favorite.

We started with this graphic:

It was edited to this:

And the final result  drumroll; please...

That is sweet!!

May I ask what the added cost is for the custom graphics?

That's the best part - the custom engraving is only $20 more, and if you order two custom knobs like I did, the custom engraving on the second knob is free! So I got *two* custom-engraved shifters for only $20 more than the price of two plain ones. Plus, I sent the graphics files to him on Friday and had the knobs in the mail on Wednesday.

Doug's a great guy, and does the knobs as a sideline to his "real" job doing industrial machine work. The quality of his custom work is amazing, considering he barely charges any extra for it.

Isn't that wild - I hadn't thought of that cartoon in many, many years - and I saw that picture and all of a sudden this song was going through my mind...

"When you find yourself in danger, when you're threatened by a stranger, when you think that you will take a lickin'..."

It's amazing what is lurking in our brains... Nice job, BTW!

Beautiful work, unfortunately the gear knob fitting is different in an R56 so I can't get one of these.

Very nice! Doug does GREAT work and I highly recommend him. In fact, my Whalen is probably my most favorite mod. It's something I can appreciate every time I shift gears.

That may very well be true.

I'm waiting for the U.S. dealerships' parts lists to get updated, so I can order a 2007 knob/boot/ring assembly, as well as a new shift lever.

I'm hoping that there will be a way to get the knob to fit; otherwise, I may be looking at early retirement.
