Requesting INFO on Wiring a Push Button Starter

And anyone please shed some light on the subject? Assuming I have the momentary push button, how would I go about wiring it?

There are many kits including a standard MINI OEM part http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...03&hg=61&fg=95
but also a JCW button now and MOSS sells them as well as some other vendors

Maybe this helps https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1&postcount=52

It seems popular in the UK and here is one thread with a wiring "reference"

When i get my car back from the shop ill see about taking some photos of an easier way of doing the Button. Currently its getting more go fast parts installed.

Thanks. I am really looking for the eaisest possible way. I can route a wire, I can splice a wire. If you have some miracle way of doing it, PLEASE share! lol Thank you.

Too bad you have to still have key in ignition in order to use it...

Mugami 07-23-2006 02:14 PM

np.. just heard from MINI that my starter is out again and there having to order another one.. from what i remember i ran the wire up into the steering column strip and pushed them up the switch in the column just off top of my head i cant remember which colors and spots. From what MINI told me i should have it back Wednsday or thursday.(maybe)

qwertmonkey 07-23-2006 04:03 PM

Thanks. I am next to clueless, so when you take pics, please be generous!

Thank you.

Cars back. and i took a look under the colum and yes thats where i ran them. I attempted to take some pix. but the camara and me dont do to well on upclose shots. Ok there fuzzy and heck and i havent a clue on how to do the lighting. In fact there pretty much useless but ill post them up in a little bit. but basics.. after you remove the lower portion of the steering colum by removing the 2 #30 torq screws. You will see the back end of the key switch with the wires comeing down.. The Big red wire and the Black wire with the blue stripe are the two you need. For my install I use 14 gauge wire striped about 1 inch folded the barewire in two and wedged it up in the switch for both the Red and the black with blue stripe wires. Then zip tied them to the wires them selves so it wouldn't come loose. Then run the wires the the Start button one on each side. By doing this the key still will start the car. or you can use the button after the key is in the on position. Also this will keep the Clutch saftey switch in working order. In otherwords if you don't have the clutch pedal pressed down it won't start. One main advantage to me is . IF i should stall the car for what ever reason. i dont have to reach for the Key turn it off then back on to start it.. I just have to hit the button.

Hope this helps some. like i said give me a few minutes and ill post the very very fuzzy pixs

ok here are the shots.. remember i sux at this ..

http://members.aol.com/pwkt/button.jpg
Shot of my starter button. as you can see its pretty much worn.. and yes i have two rows of switches.

http://members.aol.com/pwkt/screw.jpg

This shot shows one of the two screws you have to remove

http://members.aol.com/pwkt/switch.jpg

again sorry for the quality. this one shows the back side of the switch with the wires coming down. There are two Red wires in the shot you will see the zip tie on the one farthest to the right side. This is the wire im tying into.

http://members.aol.com/pwkt/zip.jpg

again sorry for the fuzzy shot.. but it shows the zip ties to the red and black wire.. also it points out the red wires is closest to your seats.

Don't put your pics down! They are a huge help. I've been thinking about doing this mod too, and your write-up has made it much clearer in my head (which is far more blurry than your photos)!!

Thank you

qwertmonkey 07-27-2006 09:56 AM

Thank you so much! Thats a TON of help!

I think that I'll give it a shot. It seem so easy!

Mugami 07-27-2006 01:44 PM

it is .. took ten minute from start to finish to do. Originally was posted on mini2 but i was unable to find it. Also forgot the persons name who i really would like to give credit for it.

ImagoX 07-27-2006 01:52 PM

I shudder to imagoine what must be on that second row of buttons... Let's see, there's "Ejector Seat", "Rear Bullet Sheild", "Oil Slick", "Missile Launcher", "Smoke Screen launcher", and... oh, yes, "Push Button Start", but what else... :)

Mugami 07-27-2006 02:26 PM

Button are in order. since i used this car for many things.

() Start button () Neon () 110 volt () strobes () Nitro arming () Purge button ()

Chumley 07-27-2006 02:35 PM

oops.. wrong thread

qwertmonkey 07-28-2006 09:38 AM

I started working on it, but I am stumped. Where should I mount it??? I dont want another row of toggles, and I want to keep my DC outlet. Any Ideas!

Ugg....I AM STUMPED!!! :impatient:

Mugami 07-28-2006 09:47 AM

do you use the cup holders for anything except change =)
If not make a small plate to cover one of the two holder and mount your button to it .. that is if your going to use the big engine start button.

or depending on what you have from the factory try next to the Mirror adjusters if theres space.

qwertmonkey 07-28-2006 11:10 AM

The cup holder is a good idea. I have heated seats, so next to the mirror ajustors isn't an option.

I'll let you know what I do.

Kentiki 07-28-2006 11:45 AM

Be sure it's not somewhere where it'll get pushed when you don't want it to--like by curious passengers--since pressing it while the engine is running would be bad.

I was thinking of putting a start button in the dash where the OEM one is meant to go, but that's pretty much irreversable. Also I wanted to put it where the button is for the dash light brightness. It would fit perfectly, and I mean how often do you really need to access the dash brightness button anyway!? The hardest part would be relocating that button, not to mention taking the center dash apart.

qwertmonkey 07-28-2006 07:16 PM

i just got it installed. It was so easy, a 2 yr old could do it.

qwertmonkey 07-29-2006 04:29 PM

It was so easy. I'll have to post a how to later. As to the whole "the car wont start without the key, I came close. I got the alternator to start up, but it wouldn't turn over. But I dont want it to start without the key!

qwertmonkey 07-29-2006 07:36 PM

I put it in the cup holder!

qwertmonkey 07-29-2006 07:37 PM
