Just wondering where you guys and gals are mounting a radar detector. Up high is the best for field of detection, but there's not much to mount one to up there. Ideas? Pics? Thanks in advance!

PS: Has this already been covered?

Someone has a pic of their V1 install...here is the link.

V1

I've seen a few others too. One guy made a steel caddy to hold the V1. Removed the rearview mirror. Attached the steel caddy to the original rearview mirror holder, then hacksawed the mirror arm, and attached it to the metal caddy.....maybe thats over on mini2. There was also another guy who mounted it on the boot deck...that was pretty neat too, he ran the remote display to the sterring column.

I'm getting the Passport SR-7 which has front and rear sensors. The front sensor goes behind the grille, the rear sensor goes under the hatch release. The display will go under the toggle switches. My installer, Tweeter, told me they could also remove a small portion of the silvering on the interior mirror and mount it inside, but they wanted an extra couple hundred to do that. Personally, I don't like windshield-mounted devices. http://www.alltuneandlube1.homestead.../IMAG0005c.jpg

That Passport SR7 and SRX are intense (and expensive). Front and rear detection devices, control modules, display units, geeez...

That is cool stuff. If you are going to buy it, what is a coupla hundred more??

Seems worth it that high up in techy.

Does the SR7 have laser jamming??

I'll take pictures this weekend and let you know where I mounted my V1 and also my concealed Display Unit. I also hardwired it to my Fuse Box.

Thanks so very much to all of you for responding to a newbie asking questions! I have a fair amount of radar experience in cars and on motorcycles(st very high speeds) with a few detectors, most recently with a BEL Vector LR. It's saved me many more times than I want to count. How does it compare to the V1? I paid about $160 for it (a deal), and would buy another for my MCS if the V1's not much better. If you have knowledge of the V1 and other units, can you compare notes?

THX 1million!

The V1 is definately worth the money....I borrowed my brothers this last weekend to go up to Gainesville and it saved me from 3 definate ticket situations...all of which I had plenty of time to react to. In one situation I was driving fast in front of a BMW, my V1 goes off, I slow down, pull to the right, he doesn't believe me his detector hasn't gone off yet...a mile down the road an FHP Camaro going the opposite way pulls a U-turn and chases down said BMW after gunning him. I'm definately getting one as soon as I get money. It has jumped to the top of things to get for my MINI before getting upgrades. It saved me from 3 tickets that would have all been for over $200 a piece...that means it paid for itself already, on 1 trip!

The SR-7 has add on Laser "Diffusion" for about $300 and according to my installer is legal because it's not governed by the FCC.

Thanks Graham, I thought I had read about that somewhere..

The VI is the best, and IMHO well worth the $400. Figure on having it at least ten years, so on an annual basis, it's not so bad!

It should be mounted so it can "see" front and back without obstruction. I prefer it over the rear view mirror because it works well there, and is not as easily seen, but on the MINI it must be offset (bummer!) because there is no room above the mirror.

And if it has laser ability (not very reliable), you should avoid tinted glass areas. It's like putting sunglasses on the sensor.

Forget about the ticket price. That's not so bad. Wait till you get the insurance surcharge for years after the ticket. OUCH!
