r53 Key, Switch to Flip Key Fob

I have a 2003 MCS, with the standard key and fob that doesn't retract/flip. With a key chain that includes newer tech, everything is remote or flip.
I want to convert my stock r53 key to a Mini Flip Key/Fob. I'm guessing to remove the inner battery/chip, from my stock key/fob, and install to an uncut newer flip key. I would then have to have the key cut to match stock.
I can't find a thread on this topic. I hope I'm not the only one to think this as a good idea?

There seem to be conversion kits available: https://www.google.com/search?q=mini+cooper+flip+key

This one of my many projects on the backburner. My hope was in addition to putting the mini key guts into the slightly larger housing, I also wanted to put my lojack fob in the same housing. I'm curious to hear how the job came out? Did you have any issues getting a locksmith to replicate the keypath on the blank?

I work on keys as "MINI Key Hospital." PM me and we'll discuss.

I really want to know how a locksmith is able to switch the flip key fob, is that locksmith has contacts with the dealership or have the fob programming system in the store?

I took the easy option. I bought a blank from ebay and programmed buttons to open the doors / trunk etc, but I still carry the original cut key / immobiliser to start the car with. Programming the fob/transmitter to operate the locks is an easy DIY, its the stuff surrounding the RFID immobiliser chip that gets expensive...
Problem with the original key is the stupid inductance charging, soldered in rechargeable battery that dies long before the car due to the constant low level charge/discharge cycle. Would have been much better to just have a standard battery and change it now and then instead. I dont trust my soldering skills to mess with this stuff, so I just carry two keys! One day I'll cut one down to just the fob as I only need the buttons....

The option you have chosen is really good, getting the blanks and buttons from eBay and cut it by a locksmith is definitely a great idea.
