DIY - OEM PDC retrofit

Dear all,

I have successfully completed OEM PDC (Park Distance Control) retrofit. It was done in R60 Cooper with manual gearbox and BoostCD radio.

Hardware added:
- 4 sensors
- 4 sensors' holders (sticked to the rear bumper)
- OEM wiring set
- PDC control module

Coding:
- adding VO $507 to FRM and CAS
- defaulting all ECU modules (so they will learn the new HW added)
- Activating PDC using INPA

It took me 6 hours of work, however manual claims, that it should be possible in 2,5 hour.

I will upload the photos from retrofitting later as well I will try to scan the PDC retrofitting manual. If anybody have question about PDC retrofit in the meantime, post a reply or PM me.

Sensors installation in the rear bumper

6 Attachment(s)
You need to drill 27mm diameter holes in the rear bumper. Tools needed: stepper drill (with the 27mm step) and 3 mm or 4 mm drill (depending on the 1st step of the stepper drill) for punching the centers of the holes.

The bumper has a marked positions of the sensor from the inside (big crosses). In the PDC OM retrofit set except wiring you will get the sensors holders with the adhesive tape. You will beet to paint the holders rings on the matching colour of the bumper. In my case I used 3 spray paints: primer for plastic, white base paint (matched with CM colour code) and transparent paint for shining finishing.

The next step is to drill 27mm holes, where the sensor holders will fit.

1. Protect areas outside the bumper where you will drill holes
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...140607_012.jpg

2. Drill inside-out 3/4 mm punching hole. You need to match each center of the cross.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...140607_013.jpg

3. Drill outside-in 27 mm hole
4. Check fitting of the holder
5. Use alcohol to prepare bumper surface for adhesive
6. Attach each of the holders and use a pressure to stick it to the bumper. Be careful - each holder is dedicated to separate sensor position
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...140607_014.jpg

7. Plug the sensors into holders. Be careful - each of the sensor is dedicated and factory pre-coded to match one of the positions. When plugging sensor into holder you should hear 'click'.

Well done and an excellent write-up!

Boneman 05-31-2015 12:03 PM

Thanks for the info. Not sure what you meant with the coding part and some of your other acronyms/ abbreviations. Can you expand on those a bit please?

heiker 05-31-2015 01:41 PM

Hi Boneman,

Well, at this forum you can find a lot of posts with similar acronyms. Just digg dipper. I am not sure if just writing you the full names of the acronyms will help you more, because you need to understand the whole concept of coding the vehicle first, what IMHO I would like you to encourage to. This post is intended for the guys familiar with coding. You can find many of the posts describing coding.

Here are the full names of few acronyms
VO Vehicle Option
FRM Fussraum Module
ECU Electronic Control Unit
PDC Parking Distance Control

I found a part number for a retrofit kit - 66202183710 - is this what you used?

heiker 06-02-2015 11:51 AM

Yes, but note that this kit consists only with OEM wiring set and sensors holders. You need to purchase separately sensors and control module /PDC ECU.

PDC retrofitting manual

Hi,
I would really appreciate if you can send me the manual for installation.

thanks..:)

PDC retrofitting manual

Hello Heiker,

First of all, thank you for sharing this important and helpful DIY project. I am really interested in installing the OEM PDC retrofit. I would appreciate it much if you can share a scanned copy of the manual for installation as i plan to purchase the whole kit for my unit. can't wait. hope to hear from you soon.

Good day,

Console photos please!

Hi,

Great...another item to add to my "what to get for my 2013 Countryman S All4" list! :D

If you can, please show us the end result...the PDC being displayed on the OEM screen in the front.

Also if the coding changes have told the car this is a factory install, then aftermarket backup cameras should detect the PDC and display it as they expect?

Oh, and the document for install would be good, as well as where you get the other parts...unless that's in the doc.

Cheers & Happy Motoring :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I have just Mini Boost CD, so no display of PDC sensors. Just 'beeps' in the speakers. However if you have Mini Navi and camera, then after retrofitting PDC and coding all ECUs, the PDC proximity bars should be visible on the display when reversing.

Parts were collected from the dealer (wire harness and brackets for sensors), ECU and sensors were used from other crashed Mini CM.

Installation instruction you will get for free at your dealer - it is instruction for PDC retrofitting, as this is official retrofit, like racing fron lights, you can DIY.

Dimitris Sofianopoulos 02-23-2017 10:22 AM

hello there, I am trying to create my own wiring for oem pdc. I have the Bentley manual and from the electric diagram I cant find the x8090 and x8091 connections where the position 8 and 2 goes to. Position 7 goes to position F30 at fusebox with 5A fuse. Position 12 goes to ground. Every sensor has 3 pins inside. Could somebody help me???

Mod-Mini 04-19-2018 08:38 PM

Has someone been able to verify what comes with the retrofit kit 66202183710? Does it have clips for the back of the bumper? I have a R55 WITH PDC and trying to install an aero bumper WITHOUT PDC. I have procured the PDC trim pieces which solves this problem for the two outboard positions. However the painted bumper just has markers to drill holes but no way to clip sensors in.

I only need the clips, I have everything else. If there is a cheaper way to get those clips or some other way that they might be held in, would be interested to hear!

EDIT: Found clips searching for "BMW PDC sensor clips" on ebay - we'll see if they are the right ones but looks good for now!

Hello great job you ve done there. I followed your instructions and now everything seems ok except from wiring the module with the car. The sensors are connected with the module already. I need if it is possible more info about the wiring of the module with the car

Can you edit the title to include Parking Sensor Retrofit? I'm VERY glad I found your amazing thread (no thanks to the forum search). I'm doing this exact job in the very near future. You've helped me out a ton! I couldn't tell if the retrofit kit had the adhesive mounts in it or not. Sounds like it should. Great news.

mikey_t 02-19-2023 07:05 PM

Dont hold your breath waiting for Heiker. He hasn't been here on this forum for quite a while.

We have pictures of the kit on our site and the mounts look to have double sided tape.

Pick the oem 11 digit and the part number (color of your bumper) and pop it into our site, we have some aftermarkets in black/ non colored to save money.

This topic got me to this forum, great information and gave me the idea to do this retrofit myself.

I have gathered all the parts but didn't expect to have to pin out the connectors myself, so that is my first challenge and hopefully somebody can help me with the manual or someone who has done it him (or her) self.

The connectors on the PDC sensors I will try to copy the pinout of an other Mini, but if somebody has got clear pictures they are welcome

Ground point wouldn't be hard to find

But

To what pin does the power wire go in the connector that goes into the Fuse Box (JBE SPEG). I probably will be able to find by plugging in and out the PDC fuse and check the pins but would be easier to just know.

And where is a good place to splice the CANbus signal. Can I just find the CANbus wires near the fusebox and splice it or need it to be on a specific place?

Thank you guys for the help and I will keep you updated.
