Interior/Exterior DIY Wheel Repair & Paint (tons of pictures)
DIY Wheel Repair & Paint (tons of pictures)
I purchased a set of BBS CV's that needed some work. I did not see myself spending $170 a wheel to get repaired and painted so i wanted to try it out myself. During the process i decided id take some pictures and share this diy project on here incase someone wanted to try it out for themselves. (btw not the best pictures, all taken from my blackberry)
(i have no idea how to have the photos in the thread and not attached so bear with me)

one of the wheels had some curb rash(the one with the tire) and another one was in a fire, the rest just had some rock chips, i started to sand down the fire wheel first to see how it looked.

after sanding down the fire wheel i came to the conclusion that it was not in bad condition, the fire didn't do any structural damage to the wheel and only really damaged the clear coat(fire wheel is first attachment picture). the next step was to sand down the curb rash on one of the other wheels and fill it, id recommend aluminum filler but i already had jb weld so i decided to use that.
there were a lot of imperfections in the wheels from rock chips and so on, so i filled the imperfections with jb weld and sanded them down after, the third attachment is the curb rashed wheel after it has been filled and sanded down.
after sanding all the wheels down and filling in the rock chips, the next step was to wash them and get them ready for primer, to wash them i used some cans of brake cleaner and just waited for them to air dry which only took a couple on minutes. after they dried the wheels were ready for the primer. the primer i used was U-Pol High #5 filler primer, the auto body supplier i got all my paint from recommend this primer because there were still some imperfections after sanding and this u-pol primer should fill most of them in. (the wheel shown in the pictures is the fire wheel after 2 coats of primer)

i did three coats of primer inside and out of the wheels, it took me three cans of the primer to cover everything. then i dry sanded the outsides of each wheel with 600grit dry/wet sandpaper to get a smooth finish.
after dry sanding i then used a degreaser to clean the wheels (i used this simple green stuff because i had it lying around) after washing the wheels i then let them all air dry. next was the first coat of black base, i had my paint supplier store make me three cans of this stuff. i recommend starting from the inside then do the face of the wheel. the third picture was after one coat of the base. do very light coats because it WILL drip.
next was to do the second and third coat. wait about 10 min between coats. (on the first two wheels i forgot that you could see that spot i didn't paint when the wheel was on so i had to go back and paint that after) when the insides of the wheels were dry i then painted the face of the wheel, again very light coats and wait at least 10 minutes between coats.
the first picture is the fire wheel and the curb rashed wheel, after all four were painted with three coats, i then painted the clear coat. the stuff i used was that spray can in the picture, you shake the can for 2 min then take the red thing off the top of the can and put it under the can where there is some sort of button, you push down the button with the red thing from the top and that inserts a gel into the can, you then shake the can for 2 more min and then you good to paint the clear coat. after you push the button on the can you only had 48 hours to use the can so time it all wisely, i did the clear coat all in one day.
with the clear coat also start on the inside of the wheel, i did one thick coat for the inside and two coats on the face of the wheel, i would have done another coat on the inside but my paint supplier only had two cans and i needed to get them painted asap so i could get my tires installed. two cans were just enough to get two coats on the faces of each wheel and one thick coat on the inside of each wheel. the second picture is how it looks when completed. let the clear coat settle on the wheel for one week, it will allow it to harden.
overall i am extremely happy on how the final product came out, it cost me less than $200 for all the supplies. i am getting tires installed this thursday and i will post some pictures of how the wheels look on my mini, also i will be at the dragon if anyone wants to check out how they look in person.
thanks it took me about two weeks to get this all done, had to start late in the day every time i worked on them, but yea not knowing how to get the pictures into the posts was a huge pain haha someone needs to teach me!!
haha the middle picture is the most recent so yeah its blacked out now hahh

I'm glad I got to click refresh every once in a while as you updated too, I think that made this post even more entertaining.
