Idea's for Plasti Dip?
Hey All,
I have an 04 R50 that is Red body white top. Sadly, I don't know the exactly color names (noob) The chrome on my grill slats is starting to peel off, so this is what I'm thinking of doing: 1) Plasti Dip the slats Red 2) PD the black tire trims white, gloss black, or Red 3) PD the rims white. Any suggestions? Thoughts? |

Here is the link for all the colors and they have a forum where you can get lots of ideas.

They have all kinds of colors. The cool part is whatever you choose you can easily undo.
The concern I would have with pd'ing anything red is that it won't be the same red and may look off. Contrast may be your best option. Btw - the name of your color is located next to the top of the passenger front shock under your hood For colors, look here https://www.dipyourcar.com/ |

Plasti-dip is a great thing.
My R53 has body-colored grill slats, and I ran custom vinyl stripes over them. I like the contrast of white on green, but white or black grill slats against the chili red body color could look really sharp too. The great thing about PD is that it peels off so if you do a couple of quick coats but the color match is off, or you aren't fond of the look you can reverse it pretty easily. PD on the rims looks great too; my vote would be for red or white. Post updated pics when you decide which way to go, and good luck! |
I did part of my front bumper between the aero kit.

Y'all need to check out www.dipyoucar.com and go to their forums. You wouldn't believe some of the ideas these guys come up with and all the new colors and effects. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on PD'ing my R53 is I keep seeing new cool things to do. I can't make up my mind!

Ok, I've decided to go white on the grill and wheels, today is the day so we'll see!
|
Hey Mrjasey, how did you dip only a partial section of the front bumper?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us Well, I tried the front, didn't do the best of jobs and will more than likely have to re-do the light chrome and top grill tomorrow... Also, any good suggestions for getting random over spray off the paint, besides a good scrubbing? Some non abrasive cleaner perhaps? |
Unusual............distinctive. Not my preference. But, thats what its all about. Youification.

I Think I agree. I may pull it off tomorrow and just go for the wheels

Sorry to be the whistle blower. Black looks so much better and even the chrome can look nice if you systematically eliminate various chrome parts with black. Repost when you do the wheels. Have fun!

On an '04 R50, the color is most likely Chili Red. Back then, the Cooper S models (R53s) came with slatted grilles too (instead of the honeycomb grilles on the R56). If you didn't get the Chrome Line exterior, you got body colored slats with a chrome surround. If you can find a red that matches, that would be great.

I think it's too much white in one place.
I think if you outline the headlamps like that, you shouldn't dip the grill. But if you want to have a white grill, you shouldn't dip the headlamps. May I also suggest a black grill and no dip on the headlamps? I've been pondering if it's possible to plasti-dip on racing stripes? I can't see why it wouldn't be, and you could probably craft some pretty uncommon looks. I have a red/white R50 as well and been contemplating possibilities for plastidip, but too be honest I think the exterior color scheme is the perfect balance of red, black, white, and chrome. For that reason I think your adjustments need to be pretty subtle. |

As far as PD for de-chroming, I'm really diggin' the clear, for that brushed alluminum look. |
I've got ape-***** with plastdip recently. grills, front center section of bumper, side scuttles, wheels, even some interior parts. Soon i'll be dipping my whole car with pictures, etc. I love that stuff. maybe I'm just high on the smell lol :)
