Driving Light Cap/Cover mods - Let's see 'em!

I couldn't find a thread on this so i decided to make my own since i did this not too long ago.

My clubbie came with white caps. Not sure why they weren't black to begin with

I decided to do the first few coats with plastidip in case i ever wanted to redo them a different color. I then sprayed 3 coats of metallic black spray paint and a few coats of clear. I think it came out nice and it matches the paint pretty well

Anybody else paint/mod theirs?

Nice job Damon. Came out really well!

Mine came with white caps too. Haven't tried plasti-dipping them though. I just put some tinting film from Lamin-X on mine.

I never got covers on my lights - where do you get them?

Day177017 Oct 17, 2012 03:55 PM

I found them in the trunk when i bought the car.

They're $15 each from Outmotoring.com

http://www.outmotoring.com/gen2-driv...ght-cover.html

Not sure how much the dealer charges for them.

On the website it states: Replacement driving light covers that ONLY fit the factory Gen2 MINI driving lights. Available in white or black. Sold individually

I'm the second owner and I don't think the lights are original equipment lights - how can I tell if they are?

Got any close up pics?

The Gen2 kits look like this: http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...light_kit.html

I've seen a variety of kits on Mini's, so yours could very well be aftermarket. Maybe take look at the lights to see if you can find any markings, serial numbers, etc.

I've got the same switch on the dash as in the pictures and chrome lights, those look like mine - buy I am not sure.

Dealer quotes me $23 each for black covers. Funny thing is 1 dealer found them and another dealer said they only make black covers for the CM. Go figure.

I just looked at mine up close and they say MINI in the middle like yours. I told my wife I was thinking about getting covers for them and she said she liked the look of them without the covers, is there a law against driving around with no covers?

Day177017 Oct 19, 2012 05:10 PM

I don't think there are any laws, but don't quote me on that. I just use the covers since I rarely use the driving lights themselves and I drive 60+ freeway miles a day. I don't want a stray rock flying into the lights.

Besides preventing rock chips, light covers are good for making high wattage lights legal to have on your car, when you are not rallying it off road.

I need to look up the laws, but I do remember hearing something like that. I've never had a cop stop me for not having covers on.

Technically in Cali it's required to have covers, though I have never heard of Mini owner's being pulled over for the infraction.

Years ago, I did get pulled over when I owned a Jeep. It had a light bar with four lights and no covers. Cop didn't give me a ticket (still had TX tags and military decals), but warned me that on the highway, light covers were required in California.

Not sure if it has changed since then (mid-90's)...

The chrome lights come with white covers and the black lights come with black covers.

Here we go. Some "light" reading for you ;)

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/tocd12c2a2.htm

So covers for our driving lights aren't required since they're not meant to be used as headlights.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks for clarifying!
