custom painted stripes...

The stock vinyl stripes on my '13 JCW Roadster were starting to deteriorate and get scratched and I really wanted something different but still subtle. I had a plan to do ghosted gold pearl stripes against the BRG II factory color. Then I got inspired by a simple black on black custom vinyl stripe I saw on a UK MINI and decided to enhance my idea with ghosted pearl Union Jack in the stripes. I used to have a shop doing custom paint jobs decades ago, but still have some of the necessary tools to do that sort of work. So I bought some House of Kolor clear coat and an intercoat clear to carry the pearl powder and set about prepping the car for paint.

By layering the pearl in the intercoat clear, I could come up with slightly different shades by how many coats were laid down. As I peeled each layer off, and sprayed the next, the previous layer would have another coat on it, making it a lighter shade. Had to think backwards as the background layer had to be painted last.

Layer 1:

Layer 3

and unmasked ready for the final clear coat:

Final clear coat:

The rear got a simple set of single coat stripes:

Unmasked, reassembled, and waiting to colorsand with 2000 grit and polish as part of a complete detail (which will get rid of the slight orange peel the fresh paint has... and why the emblems haven't been put back on yet). The stripes came out great. Subtle and barely visible from some angles, but pop in the right light:

I'm a big fan of "ghosted" accents like stripes and flames. You sir, did a great job with those!

I like it. What's your paint setup? (Gun and air compressor). Was this done in your garage or a booth?

60 gallon Craftsman compressor and Sata Jet NR95 HVLP spray gun. House of Kolor intercoat clear with the pearl in it, and then the House of Kolor Kosmic Clear as the topcoat, all done in my garage.

what color is your car? There are a lot of colors of pearl that could be used depending on the base color of your car. I used gold because my car is British Racing Green II with the toffee

interior.
