I use an 'Auto-up' circuit with GDO capabilities.
With this method the GDO circuit resides behind the toggle switches.

I have been velroing my openers in all of my MINIs ('05, '06, '10, '11) to the flat plastic area in front of the sunroof where the switches are located. Plenty of room for it there. It is directly in the center of the car so either the driver or passenger can reach it. Obviously, if your opener has a metal clip on it, remove that first. Does the '04 have a flat spot up there or is it different?

Saw something on here quite a while ago where somebody installed a homelink remote in the area between the sunroof switch and the slatted area you speak of...

Go for the HomeLink

I'm the guy who installed the HomeLink. I used to velcro a transmitter in the same spot but I have three garage doors and sometimes park in my shop side so I was always juggling remotes. The HomeLink install is pretty easy and only two wires to hook up, one power, a ground then program it.

well i added the homelink unit.. cost 20 bucks off ebay for an all black one and i had the wire and inline splices.. definitely worth every penny. just watch for the depth of the buttons i had to add some height to the buttons to make it a little easier to push.. heres how it turned out.

thanks to the person who wrote this write up...

I installed my garage door opener in the area where the hand brake is. There is 12 volts available which I taped into for the low current opener and I purchased a second "Low air pressure" reset button to place on the opposite side of the hand brake. Works great.
