WMW Hood Heat Shield

Hey Everyone!

I know quite a few people have the turbo heat troubles and I'm just curious if anyone had purchased the WMW Hood Heatshield seen here: http://www.waymotorworks.com/mini-co...5-r56-r57.html

My dad and I recently test drove a countryman S and saw that it had something similar on its hood. I was interested in getting one of those hood heatshields and just wanted feedback with anyone who has this.

Any info would be great!

Thanks Everyone!

I'm a few weeks late on responding to this, but I JUST put this part on my car. Install was nothing and I assume it'll help as its going to deflect the heat out the scoop holes and prevent it from just frying the top of the scoop area.

I have one...it does help air flow back out of the scoop.

Yes, I installed it, but via another route

It is described in a factory Technical Service Bulletin, so I just ordered it up that way and installed it easily. Same part; similar price from one of the on line guys. Makes sense to support his independent biz. since he has it available.

I've wondered about this as well. NM makes one too (though a bit more expensive).

I don't think it diverts heat through the scoop. According to the website:

It simply mounts to the hood with two supplied mounting clips and covers the back half of the scoop to reflect heat away from the scoop and prevent warping.

If the heat was directed toward the scoop, it would still melt the scoop.

Now, my question is, if the heat is directed away from the scoop, won't the heat do long term damage to the turbo, since heat is directed back toward it?

Nah, this piece just simply provides barrier between the heat rising and the top portion of the scoop. It doesn't block the vent in the hood scoop at all, and theres no way its going to have any effect on the turbo IMHO.

I've had one on my Mini for a few months now and my hood scoop hasn't had any problems.

It may not damage the turbo in the long run, but what makes me wonder is why BMW isn't placing this on their cars if it is such an easy fix.

I just had my hood scoop replaced under warranty. If Way is charging under $50 to buy this, I'm sure it costs a great deal less for BMW/MINI to place these on their cars.... yet they don't. It costs them more to have a customer come back, complain about the hood scoop, replace with a new one, repaint the scoop, give the customer a loaner car, and pay your staff for labor. Unless, it costs them more to replace a turbo than a piece of plastic on top of the hood.

It probably doesn't harm the turbo, but I can't think of a reason why BMW wouldn't want to change their design or implement such a simple fix.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Actually they do. Replaced a scoop under warranty a few months ago and the same heat shield WMW is selling was included from Mini; ie free.

Interesting. I had my replaced and they didn't give me anything. Except an email to buy their extended warranty.

Either way, I'm going to get one of these things. Thanks for the input!

Can someone explain how to fit this under the hood? Specifically, the notched part.

A turbo wrap keeps the heat at the turbo. This product protects the exterior scoop, but excessive heat can still stress lines and parts adjacent to the turbo. Depends on your goal. It'll save your scoop most likely.

Notch Fitment

I just mounted this to my 2013 R59. The center notch was too small to would not go around the fixed piece on the hood scoop. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures. But the shield is very thin and can easily be cut with a tin snips. I actually used wire cutters. I just enlarged the notch to fit my vehicle. Very simple.

The clips were a little too lose for my liking so I'll replace those in the next few days. But the shield is in place.

A very inexpensive piece and I hope it does what it's supposed to. I purchased from WMW.
