Hood Scoop/Turbo Heat Shield QUESTIONS

I have just noticed that my hood scoop on my '07 and started to see it deforming. One thing I wanted to ask, do they replace it at the dealer for little or no charge? I am hearing mixed things about it so I thought I would ask.

Ok now to stop what has been happening..... I am looking at 2 shields...

First the NM Engineering heat shield...
http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...at_shield.html

Second the M7 Aerogel turbo heat shield...
http://www.m7tuning.com/parts/produc...f76b937e8b00e3

I just want to know how both are, what are the people that have them think?

I have the NM Titanium Heat Shield and the hood/hood scoop is noticeably cooler than before. It's still pretty hot, but not as extreme as it was before.

I can't say if it has helped with the warping as I haven't had any warping yet. And I can't comment on the M7 either.

The NM was easy to install, 10 minutes. Just make sure you wait for that turbo to cool down(maybe 2 hours) before going near it. The NM also looks pretty slick and the build quality looks top-notch.

I would also suggest drilling out ALL of the holes in the hood scoop grill. I think the older MCS's don't have any holes, and the newer MCS's have some holes but not all of them are drilled out.

Well MINI needs to get off their *** and release the fix for the hood scoop. It is suppose to e a metal reinforced plastic that is not suppose to warp but, it was suppose to be out 4 months ago.

best thing to get would probably be a turbo wrap in lieu of a shield. Would probably cut more heat than a shield.

I have the M7 on my car and have had no problems with warping yet. I have put my hand on the hood of the car after running it pretty hard, and although it is pretty warm, it is not hot enough to burn your hand. See my gallery for a picture of it installed.

I have a NM heat shield and really like it. I went one step further and lined the under side of it with heat reflective material, which helped a lot too. Picked it up at Advance Auto for $20.

They should replace the warped scoop under warranty. It is a known issue. I had 3 scoops replaced under warranty and finally got them to replace it with the jcw carbon fiber version. I also installed the m7 heat shield for good measure. After a week it's still good.

I have the NM shield and love the look. It also keeps the scoop cooler. Probably going to put it on the wife's clubbie also.

I read in another post here that the heat sheilds will keep the heat in the turbo, and ultimately cook the turbo. Is this correct? As I have an M7 version, and that would not be good. I would think that both manufacturers of these heat shields would have thought about that.

The turbo has a built in cooling system. That system runs even after you shut off the engine. You should not have any issues with "cooking" the turbo.

is this only known issue for upto 2010 models or 2011 models as well?
have they released the fix for 2011?

I am still under break in period so I haven't run my mini hard enough yet, but I can feel hood gets REALLY REALLY hot.

This problem was fixed on 2010+ models. I've got a 2010 Clubbie with the redesigned hood scoop...but I opted to replace it with CF for looks lol.

I had the same problem with my stock hood scoop. My friend actually burned his hand pretty badly on my hood one day so I got the M7 Aerogel heat shield. I also got their Ram-2 scoop. They work well and my hood is only just warm now. I highly recommend the M7 heat shield to anyone with a turbo Mini.

Only problem with M7 Aerogel heat shield is that it is not designed for the new 2011 MINIs. The '11s have an engine cover over the valve body which causes the M7's frame not to fit. However, if you cut the "L" piece off the shield and file it down, it will fit. I'd get the NM if I had to do it over (may get the NM anyway).

As you can see I have a number of NM parts on my car, but I didn't care for their heatshield. It gets way too hot and then just becomes a heat radiation source itself. I like the M7 with the aerogel pad under the metal plate. The aerogel pad works so well that I can almost touch the plate moments after stopping. You can't do that with the NM, but it does look flashy.

As far as the 2011's go I don't know what fits or doesn't fit, but the OP was talking about his 2007. I'm sure given a little time, Peter at M7 will make a version for the 2011's and on.

I run the M7 shield with no complaints whatsoever. Looks factory with great fitment. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Are you running a 2011 MCS? The engine cover changes the fitment, which is why I had to cut the "L" piece off. And, by the way, the NM does not necessarily fit the '11s either. Just FYI.
