Yeah, thanks...
I love Whalen's because of its weight (about 500 grams) and polished surface.
Shift knob is, I believe, extremely important, because we tough and operate every minute while in the cockpit.

exactly.....thus i am being cautious in what to buy

I've got the brushed-finish Whalen in my car. As a long-time BMW driver, I have had the shift knob pull off in my hand multiple times downshifting in corners...due to the connection type to the stick. Not with the Whalen! He puts this connector on the knob that WON'T come loose. Plus, it's weighty, and looks great. I'm a big fan. (just cover it up in the summer, or it gets toasty...but I have the sunroof, so that probably doesn't help).

I love this knob. You get it, you won't regret it...

CooperBeagle Sep 3, 2003 03:16 PM

REALLY like the look of the Whalen knob Scooper, been thinkin' about it, but... do you have to shorten the stick? Isn't it higher than the stock knob?

CooperBeagle Sep 3, 2003 03:20 PM

Scooper, lookin' at the pix again and I noticed the terry cloth behind the cup holders... me too! I keep several of them in the cockpit to keep things from rattling around and to polish things up. Your's blue, mine's white.

Hey red03minis

I have the UUC and I love it, real heavy. Both knobs are great if you can catch a group buy on the whalan go for it. But for $99.95 on sale the UUC is hard to beat.

MSFITOY Sep 3, 2003 03:56 PM

Ok...mine's not polished. But I prefer satin

I have a polished Whalen Shift Knob. Classy, classy, classy! And it feels incredible! I love it!

thanks gatorman...so i will get the UUC then

u say they are both similar weight?

smcfamily Sep 3, 2003 05:46 PM

Beegle - the whalen shift knob is little smaller in diameter than the original, so it actually shortens the shift height slightly (maybe 1/4" - 1/2"). Really a great product - Doug's quality is excellent!

One thing to consider. With a Whalen, you can get an absolutely custom design. If you can draw it, he can carve it... Within reason, that is, and for a few more $$$ - but I have seen some pretty cool custom Whalen's out there... like this for instance:

http://iqqimini.com/Images/IQQIMINI_Mod_WSM_02.JPG

I drew it, he engraved it.

MGear Sep 3, 2003 07:51 PM

Can anyone answer this for me, doesn't the whalen shift knob raise the height of the shifter about 3/4 of an inch? If so, don't you find that annoying? Maybe not, that's why I am asking. I may have them do a custom knob for me but I don't want the height of the shift to be increased, its almost too high already without any modifications.

Luthier Sep 3, 2003 07:57 PM

>>REALLY like the look of the Whalen knob Scooper, been thinkin' about it, but... do you have to shorten the stick? Isn't it higher than the stock knob?

As you can see in the thumbnail picture below, Whalen's diameter is a little smaller, but it has long neck. The overall height of the Whalen's knob is higher than the stock one. Probably around 15 mm higher in Whalen's after installation.
Actually I have no problem with this height, though.
Again, I love it !

Doug W Sep 3, 2003 07:58 PM

I'm told my shift knob actually raises the overall height about 1/4". (I don't have a stock knob to compare mine with.)

The ball diameter of mine is a little smaller than stock, but the locking mechanism raises the whole thing up a bit. I can't do anything about that, unfortunately.

Beat me by one minute!
You're right; looks like mine sits more like 1/2" higher than stock.

What a beauty!
And your brake handle looks cool too.

Aha, you found it in my picture, didn't you?
Good finding...
Actually it's "Micro Fiber Cloth" and this really works in the cockpit.
You can also wipe up the knob to improve its shine!

red03miniS Sep 3, 2003 10:45 PM

iqqmini

i have 0 creative bones in my body...so i wouldnt do any design

thus i am still stuck at whalen VS uuc

mightyMiniz Sep 3, 2003 11:11 PM

Ryan...
If you have an idea or a thought... it can be done... you don't even have to do the designing...

Let me know

I personally support the Whalen Machine and Doug, I am currently figuring out what design I want next.
If I get one before you, I will let you borrow my old one for a shift or two!

I think Lester is considering a Whalen.

And Doug, any updates on the Custom Team MightyMiniZ knobs?

red03miniS Sep 3, 2003 11:13 PM

its not that i cant design

i dont have ideas either lmao

so you have a whalen already?

well if u get a new one, just sell me that one

and are u asking urself a question there? what was that

mightyMiniz Sep 3, 2003 11:39 PM

Doug is Mr Whalen Himself, the Craftsman, The ARTIST, the Master.
And I happen to share the same name

When considering between the Whalen and UUC, think about this.
Doug Handcrafts EACH one to order.
UUC is premade and put in a crate, into a catalog or on a shelf.
It's more than a knob you are purchasing, it's an individual's work, a piece of art let's say. Especially if it's of your own design. Look at JivanIvan's - THAT is a great Example of what can be done. If I would have thought more forward, i would have designed something more innovative to begin with. And Now I will.

Rtan, If I get another one, I will GIVE you mine. So Long as you don't sell it! Like you scoop and wheel business!

red03miniS Sep 3, 2003 11:41 PM

of course i wouldnt sell it

i am KEEPING my scoop..the CF one..i havent put on yet..cuz i want u to take pics back to back wtih the black one or the cf..i will sell the black one

wheel is diff story..hehe

lastly..so when u getting ur new whalen?????
