Interior/Exterior DIY blackout HL & TL rings - grill surround R56S guide
I'll be around this weekend, maybe i'll see your mini rollin around campus! sweet.
What time are you gonna be around on saturday? if you're here towards the afternoon b4 the party, i wanna check out your mini... you got a buncha mods im aiming for in the future.. PM me if you'd like since we're kinda taking over the thread =p
i must agree, seeing as how i have a AB/B with the hypersport...i blacked everything out and man does it look clean. Your AB/B looks great. I also just bought the m7 vortex scoop, was going to paint it body color, however, you think the plasti-dip will work?? Thoughts?
this thread is awesome, encouraged me to do this job and it was the easiest/cheapest thing and looks incredible too
big thanks to everyone who posted instructions....
the only thing that instructions could be updated on is the bottom grill portion
if you pull the grill back and reach down there are 5 plastic tabs taht can be squeezed to ease the grill out...these way you dont need to pull on the grill and hear that frightening snapping noise...

There is a whole thread dedicated to that but I'm too much of a Þussy to put my headlights in the oven! Good luck if you go for it!
You can skip the oven by leaving them mounted on the car and using a heat gun to heat of sealant. Then you just pry the lens off, take apart the pieces you want to paint, then reassemble
Do a search for some of the threads. Trust me you will be happy with it if you get up the nerve to do it
Also, belt line is easy. Just start at a point (leaving about an inch or so hanging over the ends, slowly guide the top portion so that no chrome is showing. Use an blade/exacto knife to trim the edges to match. Then, depending on if your tape has it, peel the top layer clear layer off and your good to go

yea, belt line is real easy.
just don't pull too hard on the vinyl while you're installing it. I initially thought I had to pull on it, but if you do it will thin the vinyl and you'll see chrome in some locations. I had to re-do a few areas when I was done because I pulled too hard.

the only thing i would be and am concerned about is washing....the coat has a texture and im afraid to wipe them with a towel in fear of ripping it off...
but doesnt the vortex scoop already come like a sort of flat black?

i can see how the heat gun would be better in removing the lens....
would you use the heat gun to re-soften the glue when re-applying?
would that be as effective as the oven, it seems like it wouuld make a sloppier/weakened seal....yes, no?
Yeah you just heat it back up and press the lens back on firmly. I don't think it should make it any weaker. The stuff is already really tacky so you just need to heat it up enough to make it more malleable so you can separate it. Personally, I felt safer just heating up the sealant and edges of the lens rather than cooking the whole unit in that heat
personally i think the plastidip should work if you put enough coats, i think there already is someone who plastid their scoop and he's got a black mini to...

yeah i think it does your right, i forgot about that. Well, when it comes in I'll see if its nice enough, if not im going to paint it body color or possibly a gloss black. Most likely though, it will be painted body color. thanks for the input.
the thing with the silicone is you'll never be able to separate the front lens from the headlight anymore after you apply it.
you're like the third guy to comment on the color saying its orange...
im not mad or anything but damn lol
edit. oh i get it, so they can see that it might still look goood haha, woops
Haha yeah no problem I understand. Yeah I know its red, but your camera captured it in such a good looking orange that MINI should see it would look good on the R56 haha
theres enough gooey stuff to reseal without any leaks. remember, the space inside the lense isnt air tight anyway.
only thing i would suggest to you for those with xenons is the blistering paint... both of mine are showing signs of blistering...

this is with DIY vinyl wrap... but looks the same if you ask me
