Red Bull's Joey Mod Complete **PICTURES & Instructions**

Hey All
Did the joey mod last night....it was pretty easy. I attached some pictures and some details on the removal and process I followed.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0373.jpg
Removing the buckets is easy..(4) 10mm bolts and disconnect the harness.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0081.jpg
Here is the bucket...there is tint on the lense....I used a Heat Gun and it worked really well for both taking off the lense and putting it back on. Work the heat gun on the seam, test the to see when the seal gets soft. It did not take but 5 minutes to soften it up.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0097.jpg
I used (2) screw drivers...I used the smaller one first to start and then you can use a larger end to get the lense spread apart. Slowly work your way around and the lense will pop out on one side and you can work it off as you go around.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0098.jpg
Here the lense seperates really easy as soon as you break the seal.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0100.jpg
From here is easy there are (4) screws holding the chrome plate to the lense.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...DSC_0092-1.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0094.jpg
Scuff and clean the surface prior to paint.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSC_0101.jpg
I am not going to recomend what paint to use. There have been many suggestions here that seem to work fine.

Here it is finished....

Nice work! That's beautiful!

Nice Job! Are you leaving the tint on the outside? I didn't tint mine on the outside because my joey mod made it seem pretty tinted as it was, as no light would be reflected from the inside, and i didn't want to deminish and light output from the xenons with a tint on it-
before:

after

red to match mirrors, calipers, S, and soon time attack on my summer wheels once they are back on and other red accents on car

Also just sprayed the turn signal bulb with the same black lightly to get rid of the amber- still blinks bright and amber!

Nice job! I enjoy following your mods, especially because its a DS/B
--getting my exhaust put on in an hour, i can't wait!!

Nice..I saw your car in some other pictures. The tint was off in the pictures at the end of the thread. I kept them on while I was doing the mod to keep the lense from getting scratched.

Awesome job! I want to do this so bad, but I don't trust myself. I hope a black housing kit comes out for the R56 like the R53 ones.

diplo 01-22-2009 08:12 PM

great work.

by the way, in general, has anyone had warranty issues with the joey mod, i.e. headlight malfunction and dealer says it was caused by the mod? Im thinking about this, but dont want to risk somethin like that.

Pinky Demon 01-23-2009 07:10 PM

Red Bull, your Mini looks so hard man, it's incredible. I really like the work you did and the overall tasteful modding.

phxsteele 01-24-2009 05:18 PM

What is the general consensus about paint for the joey mod? I am ready to do this but want to make sure I have the correct paint. I have used plasti-dip on all of the other chrome on the Mini but wanted to make sure there wouldnt be an issue with the heat.
