ok. good to know i think that i will be doing a stage 2 and i already have a lightweight flywheel. the quaiffe .... its 1500$ id rather spend on actually making some power. lol and my parts cost looks like it will be under 2300$

Anyone have a dogbox?

seigmann 02-15-2009 10:37 AM

So who has an R50 that is running currently with a 6-speed Getrag transmission? I'm currently do the switch as well.

How is it running?

Any problems?

Any awesomeness?

Wow great write-up! Does anyone know if there is a similar one on how to pull the engine?

I pulled my engine and it was damn simple. If you just look around you can see what needs to be disconnected. Undo the trans and motor mounts and wha-la.

I'm going to be doing this swap too I think. Advice on clutches? I don't track AT ALL, I haven't bumped the motor up any (I'll probably get an ECU tun and CAI but that's it). So I don't think I'd need a heavy duty clutch. I do want to go with a light flywheel/clutch though since the S's is a lot heavier than the Cooper's.

Carve906 02-25-2009 06:09 PM

Any ideas if this would increase the MPG for my '06? The thought of having a 6-speed is very enticing

6 speed swap enticing but expensive starter motor and out put shafts flywheel clutch are some expensive parts,i am considering it but would have to be out of a breakers yard.most boxes i see run 1500 bucks on average.UKSUV what do you recon you spent in parts?

Well...I got my parts for either free or whatnot. The gearbox that is in my car ran me 1200 and then I have a second gearbox that I got for free. I prolly spent 1700 after the snaffoo with my cables.

Thanks mate,
I'm looking at the breakers as said, maybe i'll get lucky and find a car that i can get the starter out put shafts and other bits thrown in for a deal,i would be cool to bump into a box with a LSD.Do me a favour and see if you can confirm these part #,I make the box to be 23007574849 and 23007574848 is the one that has LSD,in both cases there should be a BKE stamped within the model# on the casing. There seems to be confusion in the part # so i'm not a 100% shure, conformation would be a great help to my stupidity:razz:

I wouldnt know man. All I know is I have 05 gearbox. I didnt want one with an LSD in it as I was going to go for an aftermarket LSD. I also have no clue for part numbers because I knew where I was getting my parts from. Sorry...I have no clue...

Thanks for your help anyhow no worries as they say, whats the advantage of installing a Quafie opposed to grabbing a box with one already installed? .My info is based out of Realoem.com,and the BKE in the model# came from TXSPEEDWORKS write up on the swap, maybe somewone else can tune in,shipping this out of the contry so returining is a no no,gotta get the ducks in a row,Cheers Peter

Well the quaife is suposed to be better than the OEM LSD but is it really worth the difference in cash? If you find a gearbox with the oem lsd in it I'd go for it, tbh.

chadtoolio 03-10-2009 06:16 PM

Someone please sticky this...!

Totally agree with this.

jbkone 03-16-2009 03:16 PM

got my tranny today. The guide written by TXwerks mentions the part numbers. It states the one you want has BKE in it, the earlier have BKA. Well, the one I got has BKD. Where does that fit in? I'm pretty sure it's the earlier, I'm going with it anyway to save a lot of money, but thought I'd post here to see if anyone had any info.

MINIdriver85 03-19-2009 06:41 AM

The only thing that comes to my mind is that maybe you're a lucky feller and got a late one, with also the LSD, and the D in the label stands for differential. But I checked on realoem.com and the one with the LSD should be labelled BKL...

getrag to getrag

is this job significantly different if I'm swapping from a Getrag 5 speed to the 6 speed?

jbkone 03-27-2009 06:17 AM

I haven't done it yet, but I wouldn't think so. I mean, you're still taking off everything and putting all "new" in, right? Seems the same to me... of course I'm no professional.

UKSUV 03-27-2009 11:39 PM

I think im already killing my new 6 speed....:lol::lol:

You will need the same parts, 6sp gearbox, flywheel, clutch, output shafts...so it will be mostly the same I think.

I guess our trannys regardless if its a Midlands or Getrag...doesnt like revving and dropping gears down from 7K RPM constantly in traffic for hours at a time...:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I would do some research if i were you,the output shafts might have the same splines as it's getrag to getrag,if the bell housing is the same then the starter can work but i dont know what to say about the clutch and flywheel, but them there are some expensive parts my friend.Do some research on comparable part# on realoem.com that should answer the question.
