How To Electrical :: Radar Detector Hardwiring (12v Line) Above the Rearview Mirror...
I just took it apart and the dealership ran a wire down to the fuse panel on the passengers side floor board. They tapped in the plug in to the front/bonnet side of the panel. The red wire, with black stripe and yellow horizontal stripes. Here is a pic of the fuse panel and the wire they tapped into.

less than 15min install, v1 is nicely mounted on the right side now, i grounded it with a small screw on the left side into the metal. thanks for the writeup to make the install go super smooth
btw my radar powers off immediately when i remove the key, i followed the same directions so im not sure what i did differently

i was trying to clip my older Bel 985 to the headliner with the supplied visor clips. however, i wasn't able to clip onto the headliner at all, seemed like the clip was blocked by something and couldn't slide into the other side of the liner. was it difficult for you guys that clipped to the headliner? i don't want to use suction cups and kind of hesitant on velcro because i don't want to leave a fuzzy mess on the liner when i remove the detector/velcro.
thanks
thanks

thanks, crucial_fiction ..... i got mine done today...however, i took a while to get it to work, coz i blew the F14 fuse so how..and took me some time to figure that out.........:(
other than that, i just used finger to pop the panel out.....no flat screw driver need, no scratch....

i end up using an add-a-circuit to tap into the 5amp reverse parking sensor fuse since i don't have that option. also end up velcro-ing the radar detector to the headliner. i managed to get the clip inside the headliner but it looks terrible from the front. the edge of the headliner was bent foward and the white color inside clearly visible.
taping to the fuse-block was very simple, i just tuck the wiring inside the rubber strip. detector comes on and turns off with ignition. i'm actually splitting that add-a-circuit three ways, for the detector, auto sport button, and reverse camera. each draws less than 1 amp, shouldn't blow the 5amp fuse.

the write-up states LIGHT PURPLE/BLUE but it looks obviously tapped into the LIGHT PURPLE/GREY... hmm. guess ill find out in 5 minutes.
EDIT: Ok i tapped the Light Purple/GREY one, because it looked like a heavier gauge wire, and in the write-up he stated he used the bigger one.....
WORKS GREAT!
thanks!

Curcial Fiction,
First of all thanks for your service to our country! I'm looking at mounting a homelink in the center of that overhead panel with a little trimming, but wanted to know if any of those wires provided constant 12v power to keep the memory in the opener.
Thanks

Had to REVIVE this thread based on my current experience.
Would appreciate some advice before I approach the GM of the dealership about this whole thing.
Read my original post here. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=158800
Since I already have the wiring down to the fuse panel, I'm figuring I'd rather keep it there, just looking for a more problem-free solution a dealer can't hang me on. And the overhead power-on thing would drive me batty, so unless someone has found switched power up there, I'm probably looking to stay in the fuse panel.
Thx.

Nice presentation there Mr. Crucial Fiction!

I am going to install a Whistle remote radar detector and the consol part (which is very small) may fit up above the mirror very discretely using your wiring method.
I installed the remote antenna under the radiator or intercooler and it sit there without any mounting bracket. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to find a place right on the nose of the car where it could fit so snug. (believe me it ain't movin!) So now I need to complete the rest of the wiring so I got on here trying to find a way to get a wire thru the firewall. Any ideas? It needs to end up at the same place as the console (hopefully the rearview mirror)
I have wired many cars but this Mini isn't like most cars. Lol
Thanks again,

yeah its like a good 15-20 minutes but it does turn off... ive had this wired up for a few weeks now and its all good. you do not have to lock the car...you dont even have to completely take the key out. as long as no doors are opened itll stay off, then once you open the door itll turn back on.

as far as wiring through the firewall, check out the Alta site's gauge install instructions...they show it.
http://www.altaminiperformance.com/p...ory=7&model=11
you can then probably just route the wire behind the A-pillar and tuck it up under the headliner to the console...I've done that many times on other vehicles, but not a mini

Very nice!
Would you happen to remember the letter/number of the fuse to the 5amp reverse parking sensor fuse? I plan to do what you did...radar, sport mod, etc... on one 5 amp fuse... Thanks!
Oly
That's a great idea! I would hate to splice into any factory wires on my newly purchased R56/09, "add-a-circuit" seems like the way to go for me too.
