Hey gang,
Just curious - any MINI folks planning on attending the Spring Fling on the 26th before our get together in Kapolei? I'll be there in the '71 Mini - would love to see more MINI folks there too! -Andy |
I had originally planned to attend, got the info/app. packet, but the family is leaving for a month long vacation a few days after the Spring Fling.
Gotta save $$$ for this trip but definitely will attend the next driving school. I might check it out before the GTG at Zippy's though. Gee, if I only had trimmed that money tree.....  |
Just heard from my MA, Judy Ramos-Weissman. She sent me the following information:
There's a few exciting events happening this month of April. MINI of Hawaii is sponsoring the BMW Car Club of Hawaii. 1) Spring Fling on Saturday, April 26th. 8:00am-4:00pm at the Hawaii Raceway Park. MINI of Hawaii will have a booth. There is no admission fee to get in and I encourage all MINI owners to attend. This will be a good time to meet all the MINI maniacs out there !!! They will serve breakfast and lunch and a cost. Spectators can sit outside the bleachers. Also, I'm working on a schedule for people to get in at the track. 2) Italian Job > It's in the planning process. I will keep you up to date. So we should all go support Latka. Sounds like fun. |
Even if there aren't other Minis or MINIS running it'd still be nice to get some pictures for the website of 'em all at the track
Sent the drum brakes (yes, drums) for my '71 Mini off to get turned today. Hopefully that'll eliminate the shudder I was getting. Hopefully this afternoon I can finish smashing out the old suspension trumpet (ah - to be able to use a hammer as a primary tool - how lovely)... once I get that done the car will be back on the road - and ready for the Spring Fling and Meet 'n Greet afterwards! Can't wait to meet y'all. -Andy |
Thanks for the broadcast Sylvia! As for food, I do have breakfast and lunch ordered for the workers, instructors and drivers. If anyone else would like lunch or breakfast, I'll need to know ahead of time so that I can order extras. Continental Breakfast is $5, Bento lunch is $10.

Though I won't actually be attending the High Performance Driving School, I would like to "hang out" at the track.
Just need the open times for accessing the track. I now it's closed during certain times during the day. Definitely would like to see a lot of MINIs at the M of H tent. Photo op., anyone? |
We should have breaks every 2 hours or so. The first one will probably be @ 10:30 ish, then noon and 2 ish. Keep in mind that the track will be hot and if you come in, you cannot leave until the next break. All spectators will also have to sign liability waivers. Entrance is off Malakole throught the Hawaii International Racing School.

Much Mahalo, The_Beastmaster.
I'll be waiting around one of those break times. |
Got my car teched last week and have my helmet ready. Will be getting rest and drinking lots of water. Hope to see you there. Been telling other Mini owners about it and I thanked Mini of Hawaii for sponsoring it. Plan to sign up again for the July class as well  ALoha from MINIlani |
Aloha, minihune!
Just PM'd you  |
Aloha, Kohu'ulaMINI (also a great user name- what does it mean??? potholes, mostly good weather except for the occasional morning passing showers (like every morning where I live), usually decent size parking spaces, and a few curvy and hilly roads to have some fun on. Too bad the speed limit is mostly 25.
I wanted to stay for the social after the Spring Fling on saturday but I have to join up with my children who are playing the the K-12 Scholastic Hawaii State Chess Championships- awards at 530pm at Ward Center. They are playing all day on saturday so I will miss the games and make it only for the end as is. Probably the latest I can stay is 430 or so but there will be other times.   |
I'll see all of you guys there on Saturday. I'm still up because I've been working on schedules, track credentials, ...The earliest I've gone to sleep the past week has been at 1:30 am! All of the hard work put into this school will be worth it when I see the smiles on your faces!
|
Applications are officially CLOSED! We are up to our limit of 30 cars and will no longer accept applications. Thank you for your participation in this event!
|
Sweeeeeeeeet.
I'm really lookin' forward to it. Today (was supposed to be last friday!) I'm gettin my brake drums back from a friend for the 'lil red guy. I may have to pull a few late night wrench sessions myself, but I promised myself that I'd have the car back on the road for these events. It looks like a ton of fun! The only thing I'm concerned about is the skidpad portion - the old Minis "A Series" engine has a little flaw ... the transmission is bolted to the bottom of the block, and the tranny / engine share the same oil. That's not the part that scares me though - the oil pickup down there isn't centrally located. If I recall correctly, it's off to one side, so during sustained opposite direction cornering you can starve the pickup for oil. Doh! Of course there's a modification for this that puts the pickup right in the center, but since my engine hasn't been apart yet (or in a long, long, long time by the looks of how dirty it was when I got it) I'd doubt that I have that modification done. Slaloms? I'm there. Track portion? I'm there... erm... but probably driving around with one hand out the window waving people by  Fear my 30hp. If I feel crazy I might try to lop off my muffler and put the Cherry Bomb on. Hahahah...if I can't be fast at least I can be loud! -Andy |
...if I can't be fast at least I can be loud!
>> >>-Andy Then you can be lke the green one buzzing around Kakaako! Well, the skidpad isn't your typical circle. It is actually a kidney shaped one so you can experience the effect of weight transfer on vehicle dynamics. |
Much Aloha!  |
Yeah, Philip's green Mini has a pretty snarly sounding exhaust on it. My stock 998cc motor is tame compared to that prepared 1380cc one!
If the skidpad is kidney shaped I'll run it... just gotta make sure I throw an extra quart of oil in  The 1971 Mini isn't an S... it has the "Cooper" roof and some stripes on the bonnet, but beneath the metal there's only a tired, 30 year old 998cc motor...and drum brakes all around. The Cooper S cars of that same era had 1275cc engines and disc brakes up front, as well as a few other trim differences. I do have a Cooper S though - a 1964 model with the 1071cc engine. From what I can tell there were only between 700 and 1800 or so produced worldwide, so it's a fairly rare Mini. She needs restorin' though - found it sitting in a guy's yard over in Kaimuki (sp?) last year. Now if I could only convince my g/f that I *need* a BMW 2002... -Andy |
Whoa! I'm glad I double checked the dates - I thought Spring Fling was on Sunday!!! Saturday. Check. Jeez...that moved my schedule up a day. lol. dangit... late nights here I come! |
>>Aloha, Kohu'ulaMINI (also a great user name- what does it mean???
There will be more MINI gatherings in the future, hope to see then (and the next driving school) _________________ https://www.northamericanmotoring.co.../dca.thumb.jpg https://www.northamericanmotoring.co.../dcd.thumb.jpg MINIhune:'03 MC VR/VR |
Have you caught any flack from our local boys in blue over your lack of front plate?
I ran New Zealand license plates on the '71 for about a month. The only time I'd get pulled over was because the cops wanted to find out what kinda car it was  |

You mean in Kapahulu on Hayden Street! |
That's right. Was kinda tired today when I posted that. Hayden street is exactly correct.
|
>>Have you caught any flack from our local boys in blue over your lack of front plate?
>> No, not yet. I do keep the front plate under the passenger seat...just in case. My neighbor works for Traffic Division, I'll see what he says  |

Good news! The '71 Mini is just about back on the road. A buddy of mine came over last night and helped me "convince" the suspension cone and trumpet out. Holy crap they weren't kidding when they said "remove by levering". Then - putting the new one in involved using a factory tool to compress the rubber cone. That was a whole 'nother adventure. Got that done, got the new front shocks on. Tomorrow morning I pick my brakes up... drop 'er to the ground, lift the back and change the rear shocks - then it's time to adjust the clutch, tune the carb a bit and I should be off and running for Saturday. Oh yeah - and wash & wax 'er. -Andy |
