Speeding Tickets In Hawaii

i just received this email...be careful when motoring in hawaii....

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Subject: FW: FYI...CAREFUL OF SPEEDING TICKETS IN HAWAII

Got this from a friend of mine. Not sure how true it is, but I'd rather be
safe than sorry...

On February 1, the city and county of Honolulu will launch a 30-day
speeding ticket frenzy. The city estimates that 9 million dollars will be
generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay police overtime.
There will be 50 police on duty at all times patrolling the 9 main
thoroughfares.

They are the following:
H-3 both directions
H-2 both directions
H-1 both directions
Pali Hwy
Likelike Hwy
Nimitz Hwy
Kalanianaole Hwy
Kam Hwy
Farrington Hwy

Now 5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every officer is
supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 minutes. They have
issued 30 brand new unmarked cruisers and they are bringing all their part
timers on full time.

This was put out in So CA also and turned out not to be true.....just someone who was screwing around.

Besides 30 cars in Hawaii - that would be overkill. LOL

Thank goodness.

I could just putt putt around on 2/1/06 and see if there are many cars pulled over on the side of the roads.

Frequently I see groups of 3 or 4 motorcycle policemen at work on the H-2 or H-1 freeways.

We can always revive this tread for 4/1/06 if it doesn't pan out in Feb.

Crazy as that email sounds, it sounds like an alarmist ripoff of some actual zero-tolerance police enforcement in DC (Pretty sure its DC). Apparantly they started ticketing cars doing 1 MPH over the speed limit ... which is perfectly legal. Caused quite a stink locally and they had to stop. This is pretty recently, a few months ago. Don't how it spread 6000 miles away so fast!

The generated Email may be a hoax, but enforcing one mph over the limit is very real, as I stated ... caused a big furor that resulted in the police backing off

I'm very interested in the location of the 1 mph enforcement effort. Any chance of you contacting a recipient of one of those citations and getting a photocopy or scan for us? Of course, personal info could be redacted.

Its amazing how fast and far (via the net) these stories of "horrendous" abuses of our freedom to break the law are spread. Each person who relays it, swears vehemently that its the truth yet is uncertain where it actually happened "(Crazy as that email sounds, it sounds like an alarmist ripoff of some actual zero-tolerance police enforcement in DC (Pretty sure its DC)", or to who it actually happened to. I spent some time on the search engines looking for some substaniation of what appears to be another Urban Legend and found none.

Having spent some time working in and around ticket writing law enforcement types (you know, cops), I can't believe a word of this type of story.

Its real simple.... The cops wouldn't do it, the superior officers woudln't allow it, municipal attornies wouldn't prosecute them and the courts wouldn't uphold them. Think what the administrative costs would be as a result of such a ticket writing campaign would be.

Don't look at traffic cops as bad guys. If you want to "pin blame" on someone for preventing you from driving at unlimited speeds on the roads, target the municipal engineers and politicians.... they set the speed limits.

Police just enforce the laws, thankfully!

Remember folks, just because someone on the internet (you know, that place where we don't use real names!) says its a fact, doesn't mean its true.

Whether or not it published on the Internet does not mean it didn't happen. There were, in the fall, cases of speeding in DC or sourthern MD. They caused such a stink that they were dropped. Local news does not necessarily get posted.

There WAS a massive stink about zero-tolerance on drinking ... and perhaps that just added to the speeding. See below.

Hmmm... no sources...... None of those links discusses issuing tickets for 1 MPH over the limit.:impatient

Uhhh, Does that mean you made up the part about speeding?

Did you get a big speeding ticket lately, or do you just hate police?
