[Hawaii] kbseto - Pah Ke's

kbseto,

Did you see this week's MidWeek? On page 58 there is a column called "What's Cookin'" and they talk about Pah Ke's Bakery, which is open in 99 Ranch Market. Sounds like a branch of the place you are always talking about. Have you been to this one? I wonder if it's as good as the Kanehohe one?

yum, yum if it is indeed one and the same! haven't been there though, but i do plan on trying it out sometime soon, if i can remember the next time i'm cruising around mapunapuna.

hmmm, i'm gonna hafta call up my co-workers in kaneohe and see if they know anything about this. if not, i'll have'em ask raymond himself if it's his creations over there or some imitator.

thanx for the heads up!

Yeah, they actually have a photo of Raymond Siu and his two daughters in the article. I guess the owner of 99 Ranch Market, Hiroshi Kobayashi (huh, that doesn't sound Chinese?), is a regular at Pah Ke's Chinese Restaurant in Kaneohe and he asked Raymond if he knew anyone that would like to open a bakery and maybe a deli in 99 Ranch Market. I guess the one in 99 is called Pah Ke's Bakery and Deli.

lobster game?

hey, where were you guys? just so happened i stopped by today ~ 1pm. didn't realize it was actually inside ranch 99, not in the food court.

there's actually 2 parts, the main entree stuff which is set up like panda's or patti's, and the bakery. the 1st section has some pretty good-looking stuff, as well as unique stuff. beside the usual chinese stuff, they got hanging roast pork and duck and even tongue. not hanging but they got tongue and some other hard-to-find meat cuts. of course, he has char siu manapua and some select dim-sim stuff, like gin dui coconut or black bean or pork.

now the good stuff...the bakery is a bakery with all of his creations. unfortunately there are no dessert choices from his kaneohe restaurant. in fact, i saw raymond there and asked him about the possibility of bringing some desserts over the koolaus, but he said it's basically a bakery. unique stuff, as his halekulani pastry chef skills are pretty evident while browsing the glass case. not exactly cheap stuff. but good stuff. i nearly choked when i saw a "grasshopper pie" cost $25. but after purchasing a slice for $4, it was quite onolicious. tarts, pastries, pies, breads, bread-pudding.

it's worth a try and a visit once in a while, but personally i'd rather go to the original restaurant in kaneohe for some lunch followed by dessert.
