Just in from Cars and Coffee Honolulu:

For our first 2016 Cars and Coffee Hawaii meet we'll be treated to a barbecue, courtesy of Valley of the Temples. Not only is it a very scenic spot, the drive to get there is absolutely wonderful.

Date: Sunday, January 24
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Details at: http://carsandcoffeehawaii.org/event...offee-kaneohe/

Event schedule for 2016 at: http://carsandcoffeehawaii.org/2016-schedule/

The Byodo-In Temple parking lot will fit about 50 vehicles.

We will need to give our hosts a head count by Wednesday, January 20, so they will know how much food to prepare.

Please register in advance at this link: http://carsandcoffeehawaii.org/sign-up/

This event is sponsored by the Aloha Mustang and Shelby Club

If you have not been to Kapahulu Safeway, the store is very large and has many items not found at a regular safeway.

The upper parking level is large and has covered shady areas that work well for the Cars and Coffee group.

Next event will be at night on the windward side-

May 7 Saturday
5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Aikahi Park Shopping Center

Next event

Cars and Coffee Hawaii again heads to Windward Oahu for the August meetup… back to the Aikahi Park Shopping Center on Kaneohe Bay Drive.

The drive out to Windward Oahu is always a scenic drive from town, with many curves and breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. It's an opportunity for car enthusiasts to include a pre or post meet island cruise with fellow club members.

The shopping center will mark the staging area with safety cones. If all the stalls are taken, we may also park in the grass area.

The Aloha Mustang and Shelby Club is hosting this event.

Date: Saturday, August 27, 2016
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Location: 25 Kaneohe Bay Dr

Be aware that most times you can pre-register for any Cars and Coffee (no fee) so that organizers can keep track of how many will attend.

See

A question for you Pacific guys. We have what is known as the Tale of Dragon here on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. A little over 300 turns in just 11 miles. I once drove the Hana Road over on Maui. You guys ever gone there with your car? Would think you have some decent roads there on the Oahu as well.

I drove Hana Hwy a few times. The last time (fall 2016) most of it was now paved (meaning you can go all the way around the volcano) but still has some rough patches. If you're looking for a speed run there and back, well that probably won't work. Too many tourists and traffic. The other option (recently paved as well) is the loop around West Maui which has far less traffic but still no speed run. Too many blind corners and the road is way too narrow. Either of these would definetly be fun as a closed course though.

Tale of the Dragon type run does not exist in Hawaii for several reasons.

We are on an island(s) that measures 30-40 miles across and is usually split up by mountain ranges so distance is fairly limited. Roads are usually two lane and packed with service vehicles and tourists or commuters. Sometimes like weekends it slows to a crawl as people ahead of you many miles away are stopping to watch scenic areas or find parking along the road.

Speed limits are very low usually up to about 35-45 tops on undivided highways of two lanes. It can be curvy but not too bad. Freeways are 45 to 55 most areas with just a few that allow 60 for limited stretches of a few miles. These limits are for Oahu where most of the cars are. On other islands the speed limits can be less such as on Maui and definitely on Kauai partly due to not having any freeway system, just divided highways up to four lanes total.

Big Island is much larger with a wide four lane highway bridging Hilo to Kona areas but only with 55 mph speed limit which is monitored regularly, not much curve to it, takes about 90 minutes to cross. Better scenic highway stretches along the eastern coast from Hilo to Waimea with not as much traffic. On the Kona side highway is mostly two lane with heavy construction and commuter traffic during weekdays and lots of bad accidents since the highway is not divided.

Hana is known for being curvy but it is slow, congested, in poor shape, can be blocked with debris from bad weather and could make you car sick.

There are some "select" curvy roads that are known to enthusiasts who live in Hawaii but they are in mountainous residential areas and relatively short. Round Top or Tantalus Drive is a good one near Honolulu but watch out for bikes, joggers, motorcycles and drifters who use the area along with tourists driving up to the state park for a view.

We just did a Blue Ridge Parkway tour in the mountains here of North Carolina. One group stayed on the Parkway while our group took some roads leading off the Parkway (down the mountains). Had a great time.

Trying to get a bunch together for later this summer.
