Hello, I'm new to the forum. Just bought a Mini Cooper S about a week ago ... still getting used to people staring at me (um, I mean the car  ) as I drive down the street.

Kids especially seem to like the Cooper. Twice in the past two days, kids have yelled, "hey, a Mini Cooper!" when they see the car. Anyone else have similar experiences?

And then there are the adults with big smiles on their faces ... "Wow, how do you like that car? It's so cute!" or somesuch. I had no idea that owning this car would be such a *public* experience.

MINIangelD-
Aloha and welcome to MCO!

Sometimes kids wave at me. Be sure to wave back at them.

welcome to the forum. I guess kids like the car, as it does look like a toy. get used to the feeling, you'll be getting that from adults too.

I foud out if you are driving a MINI or riding a motorcycle you need to get used to waving to kids.

Are you the "real" Super Dave stuntman that I have seen on TV? Do you really drive a MINI?
And do you have any good stunts for us to try at home?

That was to one aspect that I was not prepared for when I got my MCS: KIDS! That's the time I like to wave back the most.

Aloha, MINIangelD

Would like to welcome another MINIlani resident

My housing subdivision is nestled between a middle school and a future elementary school and every time I drive by, I see waves, finger pointing, and shouts "Eh, it's a MINI Cooper!"

The_Beastmaster 07-06-2003 05:12 AM

Uh oh! Don't tell me you live in the new subdivision that people started to occupy @ Xmas?

Kohu'ulaMINI 07-15-2003 04:45 AM

Well, yes.
We moved in at about X'mas time....in 2000!
Not the newest subdivision, but still new.
WHY?

Funny you should mention kids, because I've noticed the same thing...first with neighborhood kids (...they KNOW the exact, correct name of the car (unlike the adults) and then, on two separate occasions, I happened to be driving past schools just as class was letting out. (...one jr. high, one elementary) My MINI caused quite a stir as I drove by!!! In addition, I've noticed wide-eyed stares from little kids, too. I'm thinking the cute MINI "face" must look to them like something out of Thomas the Tank Engine. (...that's still a "thing" right?) Just a guess.

Not sure if the kids are looking at my car or the music pumping from it....but listen to this....i was driving into leicester...music off....and i drove past a porche 996 cabriolet with tis top down which was stopped at some traffice lights. The bloke driving completely cut off his conversation with what i presume was his wife to gorpe at my car then pointed at it to his partner/wife! hehehe!! even porche drivers love mini's!!!!!

I know quite a few sportscar owners that have given up their cars of all different types to drive the MINI.
Almost always they tell me that the MINI is better handling. Hard to disagree with that.
And always the MINI costs less and is as fun or more fun to drive. Hard to argue with that.

The best is stopping behind a school bus, they all plaster themselves to the rear window and point!

When I picked up our Mini I drove it straight to a friends garrage where I was hiding it for the big surpise (see the related thread on giving my bride a mini).

Anyway, my buddy drove me back to work and no sooner had we arrived then he got a phone call from his wife.

Seems that his wife got home with their 4 y/o son (Zach)... who immediately ran out of their Land Cruiser over to the Mini while shouting

"Mommy, Mommy, did Daddy buy me present?"

Kids definitely love this car. I also have seen the kids flock to the back of the schoolbus to get a look, with waves and thumbs-up. My 2 year old son, with his limited vocabulary, every time he goes outside and sees my car, or sees the Italian Job commercial, yells excitedly 'Dada's Car!' Then there was the Memorial Day parade in my small town, it was kinda rainy out, so I took my son and got a good parking spot to watch the parade from the car, and all the kids in the parade were stopping and pointing at my car! One yelled 'can I have your car?' I don't think so! LOL I should have been in the parade, especially with the American Flag on the roof! I also love when people in way more expensive cars are checking out my car, which happens all the time. Just last week, I was driving home on a street a few blocks from my house, and there was a Ferrari parked out front (what it was doing in my town, I have no idea), and a group of people checking it out. They all turned to check out my car! I love it!

The MINI is small so I think it appeals to smaller people like kids. Also it is cute so that helps. I guess kids can relate to things that are really small or really big.

The other point is that while people like to see exotics like Ferraris they also like to see things they "can afford" and the MINI is a consumer car that is not much different than many imports these days. So it has appeal as
the "people's sports car". Done retro of course.
