Thoughts on the GP2—Did It Live Up to Your Expectations?

Hey GP2 Owners (and Past Owners),

Did the GP2 live up to your expectations during your time owning one?

For me, the GP2 was always a bucket-list car. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to find one in my area, and it’s been a great experience. It’s a fantastic stablemate to my ’06 JCW CE.

However, since I don’t track my GP2, I often find myself gravitating more toward my JCW CE when looking to hit the winding roads. Don’t get me wrong, the GP2 is awesome and much more capable overall, but there’s something about the raw, visceral feel of the R53—the supercharger whine, the old-school charm—that makes it so much fun to drive. It delivers that special “smiles per mile” experience in a way that sheer performance alone doesn’t always provide.

At local car shows I’ve entered , I’ve noticed that my R53 (maybe because of its Chili Red paint) tends to draw more attention and admiration, despite the GP2’s impressive stats. It makes me wonder—how much of our connection to a car is about numbers, and how much is about emotion, nostalgia, and character?

How did the GP2 compare to your expectations? Did it meet them, exceed them, or leave you longing for something else? And if you’ve owned both a GP2 and an R53, how do you think they stack up in terms of driving enjoyment?
