GP2 2-piece Rotor substitute?

Hi,

Has anybody found any company that makes compatible 2-piece rotors for the GP2s?

These rotors are very heavy, and it would be nice to alleviate some of the unsprung weight. Not that it really matters much, but when you combine the weight of the rotors and the calipers, it's quiet a bit of added weight in the front suspension.

R,
Manny

I haven't seen any off the shelf, and doubt you ever will, as there are only 2000 units worldwide. There are some off the shelf jobs for the 135 brakes, which are the same calipers, but different hub and disc.

Any specialised motorsport brake shop can do this as a custom job though. I looked into it, and it was possible, but would have been $$. If you want to go that route it is probably just as cheap to replace the whole brake system with an off the shelf Brembo or AP BBK that comes with 2 piece rotors. You would then end up with the 2 piece rotors, plus a better quality and lighter caliper

I've done a number of 2pc sets for the MINI over the years.

The 316 stuff and the Brembo set ups come to mind. Don't recall the exact specs without looking it up.

But I do recall the cost; about $600 or so. Which end up why not many people buy them.

Todd,

I would only need one pair...unless somebody else would like to jump in on the buy too.

Sorry I had not seen your post.

We are in the process of sending one set to GEMSTER at this time. I'd like to see them installed before we venture any farther. We can do more without much issue.

Are you building 2 piece front rotors, 330 mm? Is there a friction surface that can be used with your center hats that is off the shelf or will we need to buy a complete set each time we need to replace the rotors? I assume that the base material is used for other rotors also, what pads play well with your custom rotors. I curently use Carbotech xp10 I use my car on the track and the street.

Please do so! At last the GP2 owners and GP2 caliper owners have an option

Just your conventional 2pc hat and rotor. Aluminum rotor hats, directional and slotted rotor. Assuming it's not crashed..the rotor 'rings' can be serviced many times over for about $180ea. New hardware recommended.

Just a tiny update. I just picked up the rotors and then assembled them with the hats. All looks well. I will be installing them tomorrow along with pads, and lines. I will also be rebuilding my calipers with the RB kit. Write-up to follow shortly after.

It would be interesting to see how heat dissipation goes. I just rebuilt my front callipers with the RB kit The dust boots are a little loose, had to deform mine a little. Keep an eye on them that they stay installed.

Installed the rotors yesterday. (And pads, lines, and pistons. But this will only be about the front rotors.)

Todd created this set based on the OE rotor blueprints from brembo. All those measurements were in metric. But his machine shop only worked with imperial. So the dimensions are not quite exactly the same.

There is no grub/set screw hole. It will be easier to hold it in place if you have studs (which I will be getting later on.)

Now the important bit: The rotor with the hat and hardware weighs in at 15.2lbs. The stock used rotor weighed about 19.8 lbs. I would guess 20-ish lbs brand new. So weight savings are about 5lbs per corner.

I lined up the caliper and test fitted it onto the rotor. The pad was too close to the hat. Note: I am using Hawk DTC-30 pads. Fitment may be different for other pads.

So as Todd predicted, I needed to add a spacer/shim to where the caliper mounted on to the bracket.

And voila! Perfect!

This is how it looks:

I dont have any real impressions. Track season hasnt kicked off yet. Ill have to see how it deals with the heat.
The steering does feel a wee bit lighter though.
