I'm Done Wavin'

well i've had my pepper white MCSc for 8 months now and i've enjoyed seeing all you other mini's out there motoring around DC and northern VA! :) whenever i see one of you out there i always give a wave. i have yet to get a wave back or have another mini driver wave to me. so i'm gonna save my strength for the curvy roads and just enjoy my motoring. gotta say i thought there would be a more sense of community out there on the road...oh well.

i hope all you non-wavers are having as much fun with your mini's as i am with mine!

I feel your pain, thankfully I have gotten some waves but it isnt that many.

thulchatt Apr 4, 2007 09:53 AM

I understand, I also go out my way to be freindly to other MINI's and only get it returned about 25% of the time. BUT, I will not let it get me down or change me. Stay positive and enjoy life no matter how negative (no wave) others are.

Yeah, it's sad. Just don't put the waving hand to use getting a drink from your cupholder. Then you wouldn't be a real driver.

Me Too done

So, now that you've posted that you'll no longer wave first, what happens when someone waves first at you? Do you wave back, or just frump around?

There IS an easy solution to this: COME TO MOTD!! There, you'll get so sick of waving and being waved at that you'll NEVER complain again!!!

jac7100 Apr 4, 2007 10:15 AM

i'm not bitter!

if i'm waved at and i see the wave, you bet you'll get one back from me! :)

IsAMini Apr 4, 2007 10:23 AM

I'm a "waver" and don't understand why someone would have a fun car and not have fun with it. Here in the Dayton, OH area it is about 75% wave, honk....something. Now and again I get someone who looks at me like I'm crazy or they will begrudgingly wave. I think dealers should not sell MINIs to people who don't have MINI spirit. At the Dragon your arm about goes numb from waving and honking. In fact, that's the job of the passenger when you are ON the Dragon....waving. A designated waver. If you see ME...rest assured you will get a wave, honk, flashing lights...the works.

gokartride Apr 4, 2007 10:23 AM

I do understand your frustration. I still wave out of habit, but I only go out of my way if I'm pretty sure the other MINI and I are making visual good contact. Most often the other person ignores me, but on occasion the wave is returned, and that's probably the only thing that keeps me going. :)

mmatarella Apr 4, 2007 10:32 AM

It's partly being in VA. I wave at several a day. I go for weeks or months with no wave back. But then I'll get three back in a day! Got one today in fact. Just remember you're the better man or woman if you're wavin'.

I think here in northern VA that to the vast majority of MINI owners it's just a car. Most aren't 'into' it as much as we. Their loss! Be wavin' at ya some day.

I got so few at first I thought it wasn't recognized as a MINI by some coming head on because it was a convert and had the aero kit and grills. Then I found and head from others too that just not many wave.

Remember, although we may wave at 100% of the MINI's we see, we might not have noticed the 75% of the MINI's whose drivers were waving at us but we never saw them because we were looking elsewhere.

Xiek Apr 4, 2007 10:39 AM

I wave whenver I see one, and get about a 50% return wave rate. A lot of mine are on HWY's with medians, so hard to see each other. Not many people wave in DT TO though. Sometimes I will come up behind one and pass em slowly.. and I get a really happy wave or an odd look.. he he

welshmenwillnotyield Apr 4, 2007 10:42 AM

I totally agree with the last 2 posts. I wave most of the time. The only times I do not is when I am concentrating so much on the driving that I totally miss seeing the other MINI til it's gone by. Usually [and thankfully] it's going in the opposite direction, but unfortunately, sometimes it pulls right in front of me and I get the feeling I'm about to receive some "pooper" from that Cooper! :eek2: Talk about feeling bad...that my own oblivion undoes my best intentions.... But, that admitted, my days are made when I get a honk back, or a wave, or a flash of the lights in response to my friendly salutations! :) And, my drives are made even brighter when someone does it all first so that I can then return the greetings!

bamatt Apr 4, 2007 10:44 AM

Never stop waving!!! :eek2: If you stop then the nons have successfully recruited you over to their side  Keep waving, you never know when a friendly wave from you might be the one that finally converts a non over to our side

finito! waved in the beginning with my wife laughing at me since there was no wave back and it use to amuse me seeing my wife being amused but now my hands are tired and dont want to look like a fool no more and out of all this one thing came out good 'I TOLD U SO, HAHAHAHAHA', from my wife.
wavers go on but non wavers understandable.
peace and MINI b with u.

I got the finger once when I waved at a fellow MINIan. I suppose the fact that I wasn't in a MINI at the time may have contributed to that. But, still.......

wow, i've never had that reaction, although my hand automaticly goes about halfway up before i catch it when i'm driving my wife's (non-mini) car!

kinda hard to understand a mini driver flippin off another driver just for being in the wrong car!

MOVE TO COLORADO!!!!!
We're friendly out here AND WE WAVE!!!!!!

Bradley99 Apr 4, 2007 11:02 AM

While driving the switchbacks in the hills of SE Kentucky one summer I noticed that is was pretty common to receive a two-finger wave from oncoming cars and pickups. This is where the hand on top of the wheel extends the first two fingers while still maintaining grip on the wheel. Since I often drive with one hand on top of the wheel I at least attempt to offer the same courtesy to oncoming minis.

Well, I don't recall them having a prescreening for aholes test when I bought my MINI so I am sure it was easy for a few to slip through

SheaJeff Apr 4, 2007 11:17 AM

Alas, I too have the problems mentioned above.

Perhaps there's a design issue with the angle of the windshield?
We just can't see each other correctly due to some curve or mirage created by the light of an oncoming MINI?

WannaMini_ Apr 4, 2007 11:21 AM

Here in Akron, it's still a wave, plus peace sign, plus flash lights, and maybe even a horn honk. I keep seeing the same snotty high maintenance girl though. I've tried to wave to her several times, and she just passes me by. I've stopped waving at her.

REAL MINI OWNERS WAVE!

I've developed a new theory. I too am a disgruntled waver who gets burned 75% of the time. :sly: I have decided, though, since I live and work next to my local dealership, the darned MINI owners I come across on a daily basis that DON'T wave just don't know any better and it's up to the dealership to educate them. That being said, I say we start a campaign to post signs at each dealership and ask the local MA's to educate these new MINI owners about the wave policy. Pretty soon, I'm gonna start posting a big sign on my MINI that says REAL MINI OWNERS WAVE with the middle finger salute.

Edge Apr 4, 2007 11:35 AM

I try to wave whenever I can (if I think the other MINI owner can see me looking at them)... but the hardest part is when I have a non-understanding passenger with me... if they see me waving, they ask what the heck I'm doing. If the other MINI doesn't wave back, it can be really embarrassing because it gives the passenger license to poke fun!
