New to MINI

Hello everyone.

I just bought a Mini. It is a 2007 mini cooper s. I don't know anything about these cars besides that they are pretty cool looking.

I bought it with cheap because there is something wrong with the motor.

Anyways I am looking for some info about my mini. For what I understand in 07 they made the transition from supercharged to turbocharged. Is that correct?

Also I think it is a 2nd gen Mini. I don't know which is it r52 or R53 and what engine N12 or N14.

If anyone has the answers i will greatly appreciate it and there is any more info that I should know please let me know.

Thank you.

Welcome to NAM.

Need a little more information on the type of 07 as the metal tops were Gen2 (R56) with turbocharged engines but the convertibles were Gen1 (R52) with supercharged engines. Also, can you describe the engine issues as that will give us a better idea where to direct you.

Most likely a 2007 R56 MINI Cooper S N14 engine with either a Timing chain broken or the thermostat/water pump leak and overheat, or burned up the engine because it ran low on oil. See allot of people picking up low-cost gen 2 MINIs in the early years that were neglected or the owners did not know about the early issues. Did you have any of these?

You have been told some good information here and the key to getting help here, with require you to be spacific on what it really is and what you feel is wrong with it.
* Does it run?
* Does it smoke (and what color)?
* do you have decent mechanical skills?
* Do you have pics to post here? (sometimes a pic is worth a thousand words)
* Do you want to keep it, or just turn it? (quality of the repair)
In other words: Help us to help you get your car back to the good life, it should have!

Welcome to the NAM family! We look forward to your journey with us!

Thanks for your response! and more details.

Thanks everyone.

I was messing with the car today and actually got it running. It is bad though.

Another question is Is this an interference motor? I heard that the motor is not an interference motor. So valves are not bent (I think).

I got it running and cylinder #2 is completely dead and it has no compression. It is making knocking noise and there is a lot of smoke coming out of the oil cap filler. The smoke smells like gasoline not to strong but you can smell it. Also there is black smoke coming out of the exhaust but it stops after a little while. The fact that the motor runs makes me think it isn't the timing.

I am thinking the piston rings or a busted piston. The spark plug was fouled but in one piece.

If you have any ideas let me know.
or where I could buy a short block that doesn't cost more than the car is worth.

Here is the video of what its doing.

Close the oil cap.
Most engines are interfering engines. Mini is one if them. If only one cyl is dead, i suspect a broken/chipped piston top. You need to take the head out anyway. Where r u located?

The black smoke sounds like injector failure, which may have caused cylinder wash down and ring failure.
White smoke in the exhaust would likely me turbo failure.
Obvious to me, there is a shot piston or rings in the dead cylinder.
It is an interference engine.

+1 bad cylinder, damaged. I would pull the head and see what's going on.
