GOOGLE/Wikipedia - knows all and sees all. Read up on the history of Sir Alec's brain storm. If you wonder where the enthusiasm of Mini and MINI enthusiasts comes from, you'll find it there.
A great book to add to your library is: MINI 50 YEARS by Rob Golding published by Motorbooks.

In 1964, Mini wins the prestigious Rallye Monte Carlo, racing against the best European sports cars, including Porsche, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Lancia, and V8 powered Fords. The sports car world is shocked. Minis were viewed by auto enthusiasts differently from that day forward. The definition of a high performance sports car changes. Mini Cooper S rally cars continued to cross the finish line first in 1965, 1966, and 1967.

However, in 1966, with Mini Coopers crossing the finish first, second, and third, the French organizers disqualified all three cars due to the type of light bulb in their headlights.

Must have been a French car in fourth place, then... ;)
