I have a couple of technical questions about my 2011 MCS

Ok I have two questions that I hope someone can answer.

First off, I shifted fast into second at redline for the first time today and felt/heard something strange. The tires spun for a second and then there was a loud thud. Sort of like what you feel when ABS kicks in, but it only did it once and kept accelerating. I know it can't be good for the car and I will not be doing it again, but I want to know what exactly caused it. At first I was thinking DSC. Even though I had it turned off I know most cars stay on partially. A friend at work said he thought it had something to do with shifting into gear too fast and the gears basically not lining up in time or something like that. I am used to RWD V8's, not FWD turbo 4's so I was expecting tire spin only. Anyone have an explanation for this? Please feel free to be technical if you need to. I know cars pretty well I'm just not experienced in FWD.

Second, I have noticed every once in a while the hatch/boot lid will come partially unlatched all on its own. It is still closed, but not all the way. Like when you shut your door lightly and it doesn't latch all the way. It's not from closing it myself because I have been double checking it every time I close since this first occurred.

Thanks for reading and I hope you all can help!

Car is 2011 MCS manual with 2600 miles.

I don't know Mini's, I'm here getting information on a possible purchase. That said, does your Mini have any kind of locking differential? Could it be that one side started spinning which caused a locking device (if present) to lock and send power to the other wheel? This happens on Detroit Lockers and PowerLocks on my International 4X4 rig. Just a thought.

I don't think so. Mine is pretty much a basic MCS with black headliner and bluetooth. It is an option but I'm fairly sure I don't have it.

Hopefully someone experienced with Mini's will chime in. I know loud noises under power can send a chill through anyones spine real fast.

It sounds like your traction control was kicking in, perfectly normal when taking off fast like that.

For the hatch it may just need to be adjusted, have the dealer check it out should be under warranty for you.

It's normal? It didn't sound normal, but then again you're the expert not me. (otherwise I wouldn't be asking such a question) It felt pretty harsh, but not rough if that makes any sense. So If I were to dump the clutch for instance, it would do the same thing? Where's the fun in that, LOL?

The hatch thing isn't really a big deal. I plan to have the dealer check it out next time I have a reason to go through Raleigh traffic. For now I'll just keep an eye on it.

Yep, especially when it's a brand new car!
