You knew it all along - I'm a traitor
See above.
As some one on the verge of buying a MINI you have me wondering about what aspect other than initial purchase price is going to be expensive and what is going to stress me out about this car?.
I was also thinking Mazda 3 as a replacement for the driving experience of my recently sold Miata as every one tells me what a fun car the Mazda 3 is to drive but i never got passed a few questions in their forum http://www.mazda3forums.com/
to realize my passion just couldnt get worked up over a Mazda 3.

Sounds like the passion i had for my recently departed Miata,i think the MINI and I are going to get along just fine,Now the hard job=finding a well maintained 05-06 MC or MCS.
At least one magazine will approve of your choice:

Saw this car at the L.A. Auto show. I have to say, as a brand Mazda has some nice product. Nothing "boring" about their cars. I too had a Protege, and though it was a bare minimum car with no frills it was never a problem. Probably the smartest purchase I ever made.
I'm curious to see how the ne 3 hatch turns out. The rep said early spring 09, and the 3speed 2010. That should be fun!

It looks a lot like the new Mazda6, which I do like. How can you not look at that and grin?
Actually, a Mini is only expensive if you think you are buying an econo-car. It may be small, but it's not intended to be an economy car. The reason I find the Mini stressful is because it's not just a car; it's a passion. I worry about where I park it, where I drive it, who drives it, who sits in it, etc. It is the vehicular equivalent of a high-maintenance teenager. I just have too much other stress in my life now to deal with that. So, bottom line, if you are attracted to the Mini, get it. There's nothing else like it. But be forewarned: It will own you, not the other way around.

I wish you the best with the Mazda and I hope it reduces your stress levels.
Hello,
Any car can be that way if you LOVE it. My VW is over 10 years old with nearly 300,000 miles. I don't "worry" about it; but I am quite aware of where I park it and what happens around it. This is my first car that is more than an appliance and I still LOVE it... although the MINI is capturing my heart. I don't think I'll ever buy another "appliance" automobile... which is why I have my eyes on MINI.
Good Luck with the Mazda. I've considered the MS3.

Anyone want to buy a 2007 Mini Cooper S? When the dealer broght my Mazda to my house and picked up the Mini, they forgot to take the Mini's title. Of course, you will have to sneal onto the dealer's lot to get it....
