Lifting inside rear wheel
 

Yesterday I attended an autoX and was told by one of the other Mini guys that my inside rear tire was lifting off the ground about 4 inches on the left sweeper. My question is this normal for the Mini?

Also my front tires are wearing on the outside edge, I have 2.3 degrees of negitive camber in the front. I have tried anything from 40 to 50 lbs of front pressure with not much change in edge wear. This may be normal and I am just looking for an opinion.

My car is a 2006 MCS JCW with Kumho V710, H rear bar on middle setting, stock front bar, M7 coilovers, camber plates. Alignment is 1/8 toe out F, 0 R. 2.3 neg. camber F, 1.3 R.

This is really common. Ours is on three wheels on most corners. Even the 245/35/18 wheels come off the ground (see first picture). Last month, My wife had it up on 2 wheels at the ProSolo and the SCCA officials were getting nervous :). The second photo is Mitch Lewis on 3 wheels.

Your pictures indicate that the front spring rate is too low. You need to either increase your spring rate or increase your roll bar. . . springs first . . . bar second. Tire size has very little to do with this.

The spring should support the weight and the 'load' that you are placing upon it. The bar should assist with weight transfer. The shocks should dampen the spring rate.

Lifting your rear tire is a nice 'photo op' but not good for handling. If your wife's car is lifting two wheels off the ground, the officials should be worried! . . . not about an incident but about lousy course times! She can go much faster if you fix this.

You're totally right. Since those pictures were taken, we've been trying many different spring rates and I think we have it now. I think I'm on my 4th set of springs :( but the car is getting pretty fast. The springs that came with the Leda coilovers were waaay too soft. I'm running on hypercoils now and it handles way better. Hopefully it will show in our times at Nationals. I feel sorry for the guys running GS with stock springs.

We have a 2004 JCW w coilovers. Inside rear wheel lift was common last year. Added the Texas Speedwerks underbody brace this year and it has nearly eliminated rear wheel lift. Oddly, I could not find it on the company website. I bought mine from Autoxcross Cooper:

The rear lifts due to too muchload transfer and not enough drop on the rear.

In either case that tire has no load on it and an effort should be made of minimize it.

You can see here how a stiff suspension can still give you lots of 3 wheeling, but because i have very little droop, lots of front spring and sticky tires. These were 600ft.lbs springs all around with SpSS3's

That DSP mini needs more spring.

The pic in my sig was taken with stock sports suspension. After I installed the cross coilovers I still get 3-legged but not as often or with as much height.

With a little more traction I'll be lifting the wheel
