Rough Idle with automatic transmission

Our 2013 All4 with automatic transmission and 6000 miles on the odometer seems to have developed a rough idle.

It is not severe, but it is definitely noticeable, and definitely was not there when the car was new. It's bad enough that we have had a couple passengers comment that the car was shaking when stopped at a traffic light. It seems to be a bit better when the air conditioning is turned on given that the idle speed is slightly higher when the air-conditioning is turned on. And it seems to happen only after the engine is warmed up. There has been no check engine light.

Has anyone had this happen with their car? Was the dealer able to correct the problem, and what was the fix? Thanks in advance for your response.

My 2012 Cooper S Manual is doing the same thing exactly the same symptoms was in at garage last week but still not fixed. The car is getting dropped off at garage this Sunday and left with them until it is fixed.

I had the same issue with my 2012 all4. It was in the shop for 6 weeks... They said it was a cylinder issue and that they fixed it.. At 12k miles it started again... I now have a 2013 all4 and hope to NOT have he same issue. Time will tell

You got the problem when the gearbox is in D, or even in P ?
On mine, the sport mode makes idle a little rough in D, and disappears when the sport mode is off.

The shaking is only objectionable in Drive. I am not sure if it's any better or worse when sport mode is turned on because I never use sport mode.

Today we took the car to the dealer where we bought it, Morristown Mini, here in New Jersey. They said they could find nothing wrong, and could not duplicate the problem. I disagree, and I think it's very clear that the engine is not idling as smooth as when the car was new. When the car was new, you could not feel any vibration at all when the engine was idling in drive. With only 6900 miles on it that is no longer the case, there's a definite vibration pretty much 100% of the time. Most of the time it's not severe, but on more than one occasion it's been severe enough that passengers have mentioned that something is amiss. Wish it would happen when i'm near the dealer so i could pull in and show them. Fred the SM seemed to think there is a good possibility that the issue is dirty injectors, even though I use top tier gas (Shell) 100% of the time as BMW recommends. He suggested trying fuel cleaner, and I'm going to try a couple of bottles of Techron. Has anyone else here used Techron or any other fuel additive with successful results on their direct injected Mini? I know several other BMW owners who have had issues with dirty injectors. We also own an X5 50i with 22,000 miles, have never used a fuel additive, and have never had the injectors cleaned, and the engine runs terrific. Unfortunately BMWs standard response on dirty fuel injectors is that the problem is caused by substandard fuel and is therefore not covered under the warranty because it is not a defect.

Timing of this topic is spot on. This morning I pulled up to a light and noticed a slight rough idle. I thought maybe the car wasn't quite warmed up and forgot about it. Later today I was sitting in a little traffic and noticed the same thing but slightly rougher.
I plan on making an appt this week to get it checked out. My 2013 CMS only has 6300 miles on it and rough idling has not been the norm. I do not intend to "live with any issues" for to long. Soon as I notice something amiss, she is going in for service. I have a 700 roundtrip coming up this weekend and want it running well.

Anyone who has experienced a rough idle in their CMS or ALL4, chime in on what exactly was done to resolve the issue.

davidm52, it looks like you got of a 2012 and into a 2013. Was this because of the rough idle issue or a combination of other issues?

Dealership did not find anything out of the ordinary. The roughness did smooth out the last 2 days. Thinking on it, the only thing that I had done differently was purchase gas at a different location then where I normally go. (Don't plan to use them again). I always use premium petro.
Other then that they topped off all fluids, washed the car and off I went. I am going on a long distance trip this weekend and plan to burn the tank down as low as I can get to hopefully get out any bad gas I may have gotten.

Why are minis so susceptible to different brands of gas, even at the same octane? I've driven lots of cars and none was as finicky as mini.

Yeah I also fully gassed up my 2013 Honda CRV at this "different" gas station and it felt no ill affects. We shall see how it goes.

MINIS don't seem any more finicky about gas than any other car. I always put 92 octane gas in my tank, but I buy the cheapest that I can find. The car always runs great!

I let the tank run down to almost empty, and this afternoon poured in a bottle of Techron before filling up with fresh gas. I will repost to let everyone know what happens. BTW, Pep Boys currently has a bogo special on Techron.

Also, I did an Internet search on Techron and there are many people who say that you should use techron only immediately before an oil change because it contaminates the motor oil. Then again, there are just as many people who say there is no such issue.

The bottle of Techron seems to have worked, at least to some extent. Will try a second bottle and report back.

Same here, but you see it a lot on this board, and it was the first thing my dealer brought up when I had engine trouble (which turned out to be the thermostat).

We are now halfway through the second bottle of Techron and there is unquestionably a substantial improvement, Although I am not sure that the engine is idling as smooth as it was when it was new.

'16 R60 S - rough idle in Sport Mode

I have been getting the same issue with my '16 R60 S. I have replaced the air filter with a K&N high flow because my other one was very dirty, which didn't make a difference. Took it back to the dealer and they saw a slight misfire in cylinder !, even though it wasn't throwing a code, so they replaced that one. Still feel rough idle while in D and in Sport Mode. not as noticeable in normal driving mode. Anyone on here had a resolution to their issue? I am going to pick up some Techron to see if that helps, I have been getting my 93 octane fuel at the same Shell station the last few times...wondering if it is their gas?
