Shopping for a used JCW Clubman
Shopping for a used JCW Clubman
Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping to get some input from all you crazys (it's a compliment!). I'm shopping for a used JCW Clubman and was wondering if there is anything in particular that I should be looking for. Is there an easy way to determine if it is a factory car or dealer installed? Or is that just for older JCWs? It was hard to figure out in the older threads. Is the hood scoop warp something to be concerned about? Anything to look for in engine compartment that might look a miss?
Thanks in advance.

All JCW Clubman's will be factory assembled.
Not being a Gen2 owner ('06 MCS's rule IMO) I really can't speak to personal experience, however I have heard about an occasional issue with timing chain tensioners, carbon buildup as a result of direct injection and as you mentioned the odd warped hood scoop.

Little things to look for would be the red pattern on the shift ****, the checkerboard sticker on the hidden compartment, JCW center caps, and the JCW badge on the right side of the hatch, not the left. If it says Cooper S anywhere on it besides the floor mats, it's probably not a real JCW.
The VIN numbers should be like this too depending on the year and model:

There were 4 or 5 pre-owned JCW Clubman at Prestige MINI last month, and still one remaining. It is possible to have a non-factory JCW Clubman, as there is the JCW Stage-1 tuning kit.
Good luck with your search, I am a big fan of the JCW Clubbie!

As "drewstermalloy" points out, the VIN is probably the most fool-proof method to confirm whether it's a factory JCW or a Cooper (or Clubman) S with the JCW engine upgrades. There are some other threads discussing this topic, with links to other sites that contain more details on what you should see in the VIN for factory JCW vehicles. Recommend you use the search utility of the forum to locate those threads.

What part of the country are you in? I picked mine up in December of last year after a few months of looking. I found tons for sale, most of which were on the East Coast. I'd be happy to help with the pursuit, I love car shopping
There's one for sale local to me (Seattle area) that's complete with the JCW body kit. If it were for sale when I was looking I would have bought it in a second.
Resources I used were Autotrader, Cars.com, Craigslist (Searchtempest actually, it allows you to search Craigslist on a larger scale), and Google (yes, Google... You'll be suprised what you can come up with). In the end I found my car using Searchtempest. I bought the car out of LA versus Seattle because the market was MUCH cheaper (about $5k) and was a cheap flight or auto shipment to get it home. It was winter so I shipped the car for $500.
Let me know if I can help. You'll need to determine what you're looking for, area, etc.

Thanks for all the replies! It seems that most of the JCW Clubmans for sale right now are in the East Coast. There is one in Arizona at a dealer that was originally sold to a government official. Now how the heck did they pull that off?!?
I live in So. California and have been able to test drive two cars within a couple of hours of where I live. Boy these cars are fun! I don't want to jinx it but if all goes well, I'll be posting a new car pic sometime next week

I was originally looking for a Clubbie S but had a hard time finding one with a manual trans, panoramic sunroof, and heated seats. It seems the sunroof and heated seats are not popular down here in H(ot)ouston. Then the local porsche dealership (they also sell BMW and MINI's) got a 2009 Hot Chocolate JCW Clubbie in. I test drove it but it didn't have heated seats and I was not really hot on the color. I really need the heated seats as we are moving to CT later this summer. After driving that I was hooked. I needed a JCW and since they only come with a manual even better.
2009 was the first year of the JCW Clubman. My understanding is that MINI USA imported very few into North America that year. It is also my understanding that they import approximately 500 JCW's (R56 & R55's total) a year to all of North America. Therefore they are rare and 2009's are apparently even rarer. I got lucky and found mine at Otto's MINI in Philly and drove it back to Houston. It only took me a couple of weeks to find one. I found it on Autotrader.

I'm am the new owner of a new 2009 JCW Clubman! It's a hot chocolate, w leather lounge HC, chrome line interior, HiFi, smartphone integration, sat radio, conv/cold weather/premium packages, roof rails, sports suspension, xenons, nav, aero kit, white turn signals and I think that's all. It's in fantastic shape, with almost all of the options that I was looking for. It has 40,000 miles, more miles than I was wanting but felt comfortable with the quality of the miles by the former owner, a retired professor.
When I went to test drive it I really was excited about the driving experience but also was very curious to see what hot chocolate looks like as I've never seen that color in person. I was a little skeptical but really liked it when I actually saw it. Other options were a grey one (basically no options) and a midnight black one (I already have a black dodge magnum and it's a pain to keep clean). It's definitely unique, that's for sure.
The car is so much fun to drive. I bought it primarily for my daily driver as it gets so much better gas mileage then my other cars but I'm having a hard time not getting on it every chance I get!
Thanks again for all the help.
