Stock Dunlops

mimim8o,
I received my JCW on 11/22/08 and the following weekend replaced the Dunlops with a set of Pirellis snow tires, which have worked very well. I live in Ohio and have already had a few light snows. I would recommend getting snow tires if you live in a region that gets snow.

Thank you,

bdgregory

Thanx for the thoughts. I didn't want to cross post but did explain in my other thread I have several sets of snows for my other vehicles but didn't mount them thinking it would be a light year for the white stuff but knowing full well there's no replacement for snow tires in the snow... was just wondering specifically about the stock tires if I'm in a bind. I posted what I found trying them out in my driveway's hill in the other thread.

Just a bit yesterday as my wife took our 2008 AWD Highlander to work, I was stuck with my new JCW with the Dunlops. All in all not as bad as I would have thought. The car handled decntly but the snow had not accumulated too much. I would not dare take it out later in the day when the snow was really coming down.

I had a 2001 Jetta with 17" Michelin Pilot Sport MX's and the first time I drove that car in the snow, I went right through an intersection with a traffic light. So I know a bit better now.

I was out in the freezing sleeting rain. Some parts were icy. The stockers stink in the wet but did better where there was texture (frozen rain/snow stuck to the ground). What was pretty cool was the DTC. You can floor the throttle but the engine never put out any more power than the wheels could apply to the ground.

I think the stockers are very poor tires.

I ended up letting out the air of my Jeep's tires to about 22lbs, and took that instead in the end. I didn't hit the same mailbox a 1/4 mile away from my house like last year in about the same conditions. But 20mph felt about the safest; 25mph started getting 'whiggley'. Going to get the wife was treacherous but about an hour later it had either stopped coming down or starting drizzling in spots so and was the only time I think I would have felt at least somewhat safe in the MINI. I think I'll stick to the Jeep and need to have the flat fixed on the one snow tire w/a bolt in it and mount those, and/or get the MINI equipped for this weather.
