My JCW finally came in, Now I'm driving a Corolla

My new car was finally delivered yesterday and yup it is already in for service. About 2 miles into my first drive going over some railroad tracks the stereo started making some extremely loud popping noises. So I took it in this morning and they told me there was a service notice on the issue and they needed to upgrade the software. The funny part was he said it could take 30 minutes or 8 hours, pretty big range there. How could a software upgrade take 8 hours?

Has anyone else had this happen? I would think they would have pretty updated software since it was just built a month ago. And no Loaners at this dealership but they were more than happy to set me up with a rental car for the day , hence the corolla in the title. Makes me glad I did not buy a Toyota, doesn't quite have the punch that the JCW has.

Other than that I love the car, I am having a hard time staying in the break in range.

what a bummer! totally sorry to hear that. i'm about 5.5 weeks into my wait and it's gonna be a long one. there is nothing worse than waiting after your wait! i hope this is just a small hiccup and your car rolls smooth for miles. you should plan a little road trip for this weekend to enjoy your new car and help get out of that break in period! happy motoring!

Yep, heard of software taking 6-8 hours for updating. No idea why, this is the 21st century...

So just got an update. Apparently the software is already at the most recent version, I figured it was, so that is not it. So they are going to keep looking at it and may have to open a support case with MINI. I was having a hard time believing it was a software issue, it sounded more like a loose wire to me, but what do I know. Yea I actually have a long trip planned and we are supposed to leave tomorrow, but it will be pretty boring without a radio.

Boring? Your first road trip in a new JCW boring? 'Cmon just drive that bad boy and dig the motor!
(hope they get the stereo thing fixed though, that's a drag.)

Very True, correction, my wife will get bored without the radio . The engine does sound better than the radio anyways.

 So YOU stopped driving a new JCW because of static in the radio? I'll bet the mechanics are having a fine day driving your car, I think i could have waited a couple of months before I worried about that warranty work:eek:

DanF Aug 13, 2008 06:40 PM

You don't need a radio in these cars. I got the upgraded HIFI radio and rarely turn it on, it ruins the fun.

Danyes Aug 13, 2008 10:11 PM

Well I already waited 2 months so what is another day, and the popping was happening without the radio on too, and it was loud, I am sure it would have eventually blown the speakers. And for what you pay for these cars I expect everything to work like it should.

Update - They are going to replace the amp, bad news is that there are 2 of them in the whole country, so it could be a while. So for now the Amp is unplugged until they get the new one in.

what a great start to owning a mini.... i just dont get why BMW doesn't outsource their electrical work to a japanese company already... its more than clear the euros cant handle the stuff correctly.

this is one of the biggest problems i fear when i order my JCW.

sikamini Aug 14, 2008 02:54 PM

Danyes, is that the standard radio system or did you get one of the JCW options?

MINIUSA, when you do the build there are options for radios/stereo.

You may want to look again. JCW doesn't make stereos.

There is a HiFi system you can choose but it has nothing to do with JCW.

Danyes Aug 23, 2008 05:49 PM

Haha, yea it was just the Hi-FI/broken amp option, they have since removed the broken amp option but you can still get the Hi-fi.

Oh and yea it was the amp, they replaced it yesterday and everything is good to go. Though it was nice not having the annoying seat belt beep.
