How does Active Sound Design work?

Is the ASD on all the time or just when using sport mode?

I have a new manual transmission S All4 and can't tell if ASD is in use when I step on the gas or if it's the normal engine sound.

It seems that ASD is on by default during Normal, and Sport. It doesn't seem on in Green mode.

Is there any way to turn it off? Having that on with the JCW exhaust kinda hurts it a bit.

Thanks f60jcw. So if I enable green mode would that be the standard engine sound?

You need a bluetooth obdii adapter and Bimmercode to disable it.

Well the modes also change other engine characteristics like timing, fuel, etc. I don't know the specifics, but just observed that ASD is off in green.

When using a JB4, there is an option to disable it in their main menus. Kind of a nifty surprise.

Sport Mode does not in any way impact the timing of the engine, fuel delivery, etc. When activated, it tightens the steering, stiffens the suspension (if the car is equipped with Dynamic Damper Control), adjusts the transmission shift points (if the car is an auto), and enables the “pops and burbles” from the exhaust. Those occur because it is a direct injection engine, and it overfuels the cylinders to cool them when in Sport Mode. The pops and burbles are the burning off of the excess fuel.

What about Green mode? There's definitely something going on with the engine there, not just the transmission.

The electronic throttle pedal position vs throttle body opening is mapped differently for each of the 3 modes.

Sport - mapped to more aggressively open the throttle body relative to throttle pedal position.
Normal - nominal throttle pedal/throttle body mapping
Green - opens the throttle body less aggressively for better fuel consumption and that lazy feeling throttle response.

Do you have a recommendation on what bluetooth obdii works best?
