Thank you! Seems silly to design it assuming you'll always have the headlamps in auto (I don't--old behavior to minimize cycling bi-xenon HIDs that age quicker the more they are cycled).

Interesting part is that if you are in normal mode (not auto) because you don't need side lighting, like on the highway or freeway or motorway depending on where you're from, then once you get off and on a country road and want them for 90 degree turns and such, if you move the selector quickly from full right to full left, the lights don't even go out it just turns on the side lighting when you steer.
Generally I don't use Auto unless I want the side lighting, as I noticed if you swing the steering a little to the left or right they come on and in many cases I don't need them.
You will also need Auto if you want high beam auto dimming, meaning you're driving on that country road and want high beams all the time but low beams when a car is coming.

Lights actually reduce your MPG and/or your EV range. Sure its nice to have them on all the time or as long as possible when they decide to turn on, but I decide for myself and only turn on lights when I can actually see them on the road. This means NOT before sunset sometimes 10-15 minutes after depending on the lighting conditions clouds vs clear.
Remember that daytime driving lights are always on for safety, I don't turn those off even though I can. I just don't want all the other lights on early. In auto many cars turn on before sunset.

I'm sure the MPG hit is negligible; EV might matter more if the SE were EV-only, but its a hybrid. Either way, it isn't something one should reasonably contemplate to gain extra fractions of an MPG or EV range.
