Adding drivers assist

Apparently the assisted cruise uses a camera and I think my JCW has the forward facing camera needed.

I will be looking into the parts and coding to see if the mod can be done and if it can be done under 1K.

I added this to my F-150 and it was far cheaper for me to add...

I'd be shocked it if only uses a front facing camera. Typically it's radar as the fundamental technology.

I agree. My truck is radar-based technology. In the MINI manual however, it discusses only a camera. I am going through the service manual though to cross-reference and hopefully learn the parts needed.

Coding will be a completely different investigation... but not worth looking into until I know the parts situation.

I'm sure it's more than just the camera. I've never seen a system not with radar or laser or something else. You could ask a tech at Mini or even a BMW tech - I'm sure it's the same as the X1 system or any other BMW adaptive cruise system for that matter.

Subaru eyesight is the only one I know of that is camera only system. It uses 2 cameras so it can calculate depth just like our brains.

Read through the entire service manual and there are no module specifications/ install instructions. I did find a wiring diagram that does not list any sensor hardware, but did connect to the camera in front of the mirror.

I know I have the instrument cluster as it has the cruise light to be enabled...

Still looking.

I have found out the system is camera based. And, I have the camera (which sits just underneath the mirror). I do need a new component in the steering wheel. When I pop that off, I will see if I have the harness/ plugs to enable the system. After that, it will be a matter of finding a VIN of a MCC with Driver's Assist enabled and getting their asbuilt data. Progress.

Wow - very surprised it's camera only. Is it dual cameras for depth perception?

Did you find a used camera? New parts alone are well beyond your goal of staying under $1K.

You might also need a new windshield.
