Found it, according to Realoem.com, they are microphone covers, but I don't see any above them.
I do have BT, and it works.

I always knew what they were, but never noticed the microphone symbol. Hard to focus over your head with bifocals.

With what I do for a living, I'm shocked I didn't even notice at first.

Mine are different: see photo. Behind the cover is ceiling fabric. I poked thru the opening and didn't feel anything in there. I also have BT.

I always thought this was a way to open and close the sunroof using a screwdriver or something. Looking close, it isn't.

I like the mic symbol! Mine is a 2014, and is like the pic from Conrad- just a slot. Mine does have a hole behind it, at least on the driver's side. When I first got the car, I was getting terrible mic sound, so I pulled that cover off (very easy). The mic was up there, dangling behind the headliner. I put it in its proper clip on the backside of that plastic cover, and snapped the cover back in place. Got much better sound, and it hasn't moved since.

Really weird if it's indeed solid headliner behind there... maybe there's holes we can't see, or maybe they moved the mic. Someone pop theirs off and check!

Actually, it's a very credible explanation as to why us old guys put sport tuning boxes on our MINIs. In fact, it may help explain why so many of us geezers drive MINIs in the first place.
