F55/F56 Aftermarket Gauge Install

Aftermarket Gauge Install
Added and Boost and Water Temp Gauges to my car. Taken me a while to get around to doing this. Had them for 5 months!
Used AEM gauges. They are not bad but not as good as the Marshalls I installed in my r56. I used a circle cutter and added the red vinyl to make them more closely match the OEM JCW speedometer. That's the thing with these gauges you can easily pull them apart and they provide metric and imperial covers.
Used the Cravenspeed Pods.
The gauges come with a dimming sensing circuit but I gave up and hooked it straight to 12v - so they run bright D&N. The gauges came with 7 different LED backlight colors but none match the amber of my car so I put them on white and stuck and orange gel behind the faceplate. They match the color perfectly now.
I will eventually change the water temp to oil once there is a decent sensor on the market..

I ran it though the gasket where the clutch cable goes. If you are looking at the engine to right corner under the bonnet hinge. I drilled a small hole then a bigger one...( I put the bit in a drill extender to make it easier) there are a lot of wires do be careful. I'm sure you can figure or out from there.

When I was reading some codes on my F55, I noticed there was a reading for oil temperature. It would be nice if that could be used, display it digitally, or perhaps, find out where the sensor is and mount something similar for the dial gauge.
I had my modding and gauge phase with my 2000 VW TDI Beetle. Back then, there weren't really as many good looking gauge pods, so I made my own. Now, totally stock, man, lol.

I would switch boost for voltage. Then again, with the oh so smart battery system, maybe you need that, lol.
Going back to my gauge days on my VW, it was always a matter of controversy of where to get the exhaust gas temperature readings. The purists drilled a hole in the turbo. I put mine in the exhaust pipe.
I don't think there's an existing sensor reading that one could read over the can bus. There must be oxygen sensors...they don't provide temperature readings, do they?

Make sure you have the firmware installed for the 3rd Gen Mini. I ran one in my R56 and when I traded I had it updated. I monitor boost, oil pressure, IAT, water temp, but it's simple to change tp other settings.

This would be a cheap way to get involved again in gauge world.
How do you have yours mounted? Cravenspeed on the left, I assume (judging from the sticker on your mods on a lift thread?

As an aside, driving in the mountains around Park City, UT during a TDIFest, really made the gauges lively. I never saw anything like it on flat(er) ground. You want to be able to blast up those mountain passes without worrying about going outside prudent operating parameters. I can see that being a reason for conservatism on the part of the car's engineers.

I'm using the old version of the Cravenspeed mount. It in turn is bolted to the CS Garmin mount.

They are great people to deal with. I've been running the same Scanguage II for several years now. I originally bought it for my R56 off another forum (non Mini). I called and they said to send it in to be updated with 2nd Gen firmware. Cost me the priority postage to send it to them and they covered update and return postage. Same deal with the same gauge when I got the F56.
This is something I bought in maybe the 2002 time frame. Even the normal $25 charge would be a deal.

Map reading at rest less than ambient
Got my scan gauge back and playing with it a little.
I noticed that map read something like 12.8 psi at rest. According to accuweather atmospheric pressure at my location was something like 14.5 psi.
Any concerns warranted? I might see if I can verify the reading with a friend's obdc reader.
I goosed maybe 10 psi of boost going up a hill. Not sure what normal max boost is.
