I may be mistaken, but I think that those instructions are for a different shifter.

I ended up getting it off with some leverage. There were 2 parts; the ball and the collar/boot came off independently. I posted because I suspected that was the case and didn't want to yank on the wrong part.

 

I almost knocked myself out when I took mine off.

 

Been more than one sunroof broken while removing shift *****.
