'8 Speed Sport Automatic' for F56 JCW

I read on 'Motoring File' that the 8 speed sport automatic will in the F56 JCW starting in November. Here is the statement:

In fact the only change for any model destined for the US is the transition from a six speed automatic to the 8 speed automatic in the F56 JCW.

http://www.motoringfile.com/2017/09/...lans-detailed/

I want to build and order an F56 JCW but I also want the 8 speed sport trans. (not the DCT) Has anybody heard anything?

thanks, Hoopty

Not a word.

Rumors were that a DCT was coming w/ the 2018 models (didn't happen) Also there was supposed to be a power bump to all models except the JCW (again, didn't happen).

Until you hear it directly form MINI, assume nothing.

My guess is, any changes will be on the 2019's and not before.

And the 19 model will most likely be that last year of the G3 cars.

If you believe the rumors (and MotoringFile eventually gets rumors right), the 8-speed sport auto that exists now is not the one that's coming, but rather a new DCT which theoretically should be just as fast, if not faster than the traditional Aisin 8-speed. In addition to the DCT, you'll see the other small, LCI changes to the engines, options, and styling. Sounds like very small differences compared to previous LCI refreshes.

According to their sources, we'll see this change for March production on the F56/F55/F57 as either a MY2018 revision, or my guess it will be a early MY2019. This wouldn't be unheard of as the JCW F60, JCW F57, and couple other models came out as next model year cars a few months early. Typically MINI will start a new model year with July/August production.

Any reason you'd want the current sport auto vs. the DCT?

The F56 still has a couple years left. MINI runs on 7 year cycles with a mid cycle refresh (LCI) due next March. We'll see the G56 probably as a 2021 model year in 2020. The other models will eventually roll over the next few years after that.

March 2018 production is supposed to be when the DCT and subtle increase in power comes

Dunno, but logic dictates that instituting a change like that during a build cycle would not make good business sense. Unless March production starts a 2019 model year.

GM is shorting the 2018 Corvette run and will start producing 2019's very early......maybe Mini will do the same.

Imagine ordering your car and then finding out a car built one week after yours has more power and a DCT transmission.

I for one would not be a happy camper. Since they would both be 2018's and the one ordered later would be more desirable (at least in my eyes)

If on the other hand it was coming out as a 2019, I could purchase a 2018 or wait until I get one w/ the "goodies".

Finally!

I've been patiently waiting for the '8 speed sport auto' before ordering a new JCW. I checked the Mini UK site today and it is showing the 8 speed when I build a JCW.....Weeee!

Just hope it shows up on the USA site soon.

Somebody wants an 8 speed automatic, why do you want to turn it into the usual manuals are better than automatics thread?

Rumor has it there may be a wee bit mo' power coming later in 2018 as well -- 8 speed sport tranny with more grunt. Might just be worth the wait.

Becuase its the internet and I'm allowed to have my opinion, disagree or agree with it.

And it was clearly my opinion.

There were rumors of a DCT coming to Mini. I'd love to see that w/ a nice bump in HP and torque. Wouldn't a 300 HP JCW be nice? or a 250HP MCS?

If the do a significant upgrade to models later this year, will they be sold as 2019's? (GM and the C7 are doing a short 2018 run and intro'ing the 2019 very early).

I'd personally hate to have ordered a 2018 and find out that if I'd waited a week or two more I could have gotten a 2018 w/ a better tranny and more power. In fact I'd be "Pissed".

MotoringFile seems to suggest modest power bumps (~5%) and that the engine revision is more about efficiency improvements. We'll see how the 7-speed DCT fares though with the 3rd gen, MINI seems to be pretty dialed in with their transmissions. Always room for improvement though!

Yeah, was just ruminating about a big power bump across the line. W/ Ford RS and others, the Mini could use a big power bump for the JCW and the S. I wish BMW would bring the M140i over. The BMW group doesn't really offer any real "hot hatches" in NA compared to others.

In the Hot Hatch market, the Mini is pretty tepid IMO.

Dct

Now the Mini UK site is showing the 'Dual Clutch Transmission' or as they call it 'Double Clutch Automatic Transmission'. It is not an actual option but at least they are showing it. See attached
